“There are days when solitude is a heady wine that intoxicates you with freedom, others when it is a bitter tonic, and still others when it is a poison that makes you beat your head against the wall.”
~~~ Colette
“Man loves company even if it is only that of a small burning candle.”
~~~ Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
There are times in everyone’s life when we just need to be alone for awhile. Even those of us who love to be interacting with others will often need some time to ourselves.
Solitude — what a wonderful word that is. When you say it — or read it — it evokes a feeling that is just like the word — Solitude.
Solitude is necessary for meditation and quiet reflection. It is also sometimes necessary when we need to isolate ourselves in order to complete a difficult task or meet a deadline. Maybe it’s just one of those times when we need to relax with some of our favorite music or a good book. I often find that sometimes I just like silence — no other reason than that I enjoy it from time-to-time. Those moments alone, with silence, have a way of revitalizing us — replenishing our energy supply — grounding us in our inner selves.
Of course, when the need for solitude becomes a technique to hide, withdraw or avoid life’s realities, then it is no longer helpful and becomes unhealthy in every sense — physically, mentally and spiritually. When we abuse solitude we are are running away from our lives, rather than enhancing them. Too much solitude has a way of keeping us from dealing with life’s problems and leaving them unsolved. Staying with these problems and working them out is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
As a member of the human race we are by nature social creatures and we thrive on contact with others. Therefore, it is vital that we learn to make time for ourselves — our “alone time”. We need these moments of solitude in order to restore ourselves and grow. Making time for ourselves can bring us strength and allow us to return to our work and relationships feeling stronger and restored.
“We live in a very tense society. We are pulled apart… and we all need to learn how to pull ourselves together…. I think that at least part of the answer lies in solitude.”

“Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.”
~~~ Carl W. Buechner
“Above all, be true to yourself,
and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.”
~~~ Carl W. Buechner
How many times in your life have you found yourself totally committed to pursuing a passion? You know what I mean — when every ounce of your being is completely focused on doing something that you truly love. I hope that it has been many times — and that there will be many more.
One of the difficulties in my own life is that all the “stuff” that “has to be done” gets in the way and I tend to forget what it is that I truly love to do. Now that I’m getting older I find that I feel that more often than I used to. One of the things that I do often is writing this blog — it is a passion for me. I love doing this — I love to write. But the “obligations of life” can so often obscure our ability to see what we love to do. It becomes a sort of self-sabotage, especially when it’s a conscious choice to forget our dreams. When we make that choice, then we never have to risk failure, right?
Even though we may decide to ignore our passions, doesn’t mean they cease to exist. There will always be an emptiness in our inner self when a passion has been forgotten. Life is too short to stop doing what you love, and it is never too late to rediscover your favorite things. If you gave up playing an instrument, or painting, or drawing, or spending time in nature, or any other activity or interest that you once loved to do, now may be the time to take up that passion again. If you don’t remember what it is that you used to be passionate about, you may want to think about the activities or interests that you used to love or the dreams that you always wished you could pursue.
The thing to realize is that there is room in your life for your responsibilities as well as the pursuit of your passions. When you make an effort to incorporate your interests into your life, the fire within you ignites. You feel excited, inspired, and fed by the flames that are sparked by living your life with a passion for what you love.
A final quote for this article …
“The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.”

“One needs something to believe in, something for which one can have whole-hearted enthusiasm. One needs to feel that one’s life has meaning, that one is needed in this world.”
~~~Hannah Senesh
“Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness.
It is not attained through self-gratification,
but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”
~~~ Helen Keller
An interesting fact is that almost all living things belong to a particular soul group and are born knowing their purpose in life. For example, a non-domesticated animal will devote most of its energy to foraging for food, taking care of itself and its young, and creating shelter. It isn’t because it was trained to do this — it just knows, instinctively, how to do these things.
But one species that doesn’t know its purpose in life, is humans. We’re not born knowing our purpose — and yet — it is purpose that gives our life meaning. As you may know, once you discover your purpose you can live your life with full direction as you make the choices necessary to achieve your reason for being here. Many of us are struggling with this and one reason is that finding your purpose is not always easy to do.
Your reason for being on this planet — your purpose — is as unique as you are. Your purpose will evolve as you move through your life. No one can tell you what your purpose is. Figuring out your purpose and eventually fulfilling it can be a life-long endeavor.
How do you go about figuring out what your purpose is for being here?
One way is to ask yourself what it is that drives you — not what forces you out of bed in the morning — but what makes you glad to be alive. You could make a list of activities that you wish you were involved in — or you might think about how you would love to be making a living — what sort of career would really turn you on. Those are the thought processes that will provide the clues to your true purpose. You’ve probably already done this many times already without even realizing that you were going through a process of discovery.
Try to imagine yourself devoting your time and energy to projects that spark your imagination, inspire, excite, and satisfy you. More often than not, these activities are some of the ways that you can fulfill your life purpose. When you spend time on these endeavors you will rarely ever feel that you’ve wasted your time.
Once you can live your life with purpose, you will feel a new level of significance — you’ll feel capable and worthy. Everything you do will have meaning to it.
And — one more quote for the road to your purpose ….
“A useless life is an early death.” ~~~ Goethe
