Peace on Earth

Dec 20, 2006 @ 10:36 am by Ron

As you can tell by the articles I’ve been writing lately, the subject of “Peace” has been uppermost in my mind. I know it’s the result of the frustration I feel about all the violence in the world today. In fact, even the local news here in Ohio is filled with one act of violence after another. I’ve been forcing myself to tune my mind onto other more pleasant things while I wait for the weather report.

I presently have another sort of “hang-up” about this because for the second year in a row I really wanted to get one of those lighted signs to put in my window this year that said “Peace” or “Peace on Earth” or something along those lines.

I searched in every store within a reasonable driving distance. I could find “Santa Clause” — I could find “Angels” — or “Christmas Trees” — or “Reindeer” — or “Stars” —

—– but not one that just said “Peace“.

I did try to make one myself, but that turned out to be an exercise in non-peaceful frustration. (Have you ever tried to get a string of lights to stay on a piece of cardboard with holes punched in it?) As they say, don’t try this at home!

Even as I drove through the neighborhoods looking at all the seasonal light displays — I didn’t see the word “Peace” anywhere.

—– Disappointing!

According to the home page of the World Peace Prayer Society, the simple prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth”, carries a message of great hope and healing. It transcends barriers of nationality, race and religion to unite humanity in a call for the common good of all life on Earth.

What better time than right now to accept their invitation to join in this universal prayer for peace? The link below will take you to a page where you can view this prayer in 80 languages. A link at the bottom of that page will take you to the Society’s home page where you can learn more about this organization’s work.

“May Peace Prevail On Earth” — in 80 languages

Have a great and peaceful day.

Oh yes, this phrase that I end all my postings with — “Shanti” –That’s a sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world, Peace for all beings.”

Shanti,

Good day fine reader,

During this time of year it’s always nice to spread cheer to others. I would like to share with you a short video I’ve mentioned before — http://www.YourDashMovie.com — which has been viewed by over 15 million people in the past few months. It is one of the most popular movies of its kind, of all time.

I know this is a frantic and stressful time of year, so it would be nice to stop for a few minutes and reflect on the truly important things in life. If you haven’t seen this movie — or, even if you have — take a couple of minutes to see it — http://www.YourDashMovie.com — and send it along to others who would appreciate the message as well.

Shanti,

P.S. Something NEW for YOU from the Spiritual Cinema Circle!

You’ll find out what’s new below, but first, here’s a personal note from Stephen Simon, the Co-Founder of The Spiritual Cinema Circle:

It’s Time To Own Our Power

If you’re like me, you believe in making a difference in the world. Hollywood isn’t interested in heart-and-soul movies. They don’t think there’s a big enough audience for them.

You and I know, though, that there’s plenty of us in the world who want to see movies that make you feel better about being a human being. I think it’s time we made our voices heard, loud and clear.

At The Spiritual Cinema Circle, we’re committed to sending you great movies every month. We want you to join us in a larger mission, as well. We’re committed to a new spirituality in the world, and we’re guessing you feel the same way.

The spiritual movement of the past thirty years is often tagged with labels like New Age, New Thought, or Transformational. Labels aren’t really that important, though. You probably feel a deep conviction, as I do, that we fulfill our highest potential when we’re in touch with that part of us, that divinity and god(dess) inside us all. We do create our own reality, and in order to change that reality for the better, we need to adjust our beliefs about what is possible.

In his book, CULTURAL CREATIVES: HOW 50 MILLION PEOPLE ARE CHANGING THE WORLD, Paul Ray refers to people like us as Cultural Creatives. His book says we have a tremendous power but one thing is lacking — and that’s our awareness of ourselves as a whole community.

It’s time to own our own power and join together to make a difference.

As a Member of The Circle, each month you’ll receive a DVD with FOUR new movies (a mix of features, shorts and documentaries). Unlike many other services, with The Circle, you get to KEEP each volume of movies, and we encourage you to share them with your friends and family. There isn’t another offer like this anywhere.

Join us in changing the world by raising the consciousness of entertainment in our time …

The Power of Peace

Dec 20, 2006 @ 08:25 am by Ron

“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”

~~~ Mahatma Gandhi
Tese are interesting times. I wrote a few days ago about how I keep hearing the world leaders continuing their talk about how they will resort to war and violence in an effort to solve problems. It’s seems to be all about “Winning the War!” Listening to all this talk of violence led me to think about a great leader that understood the power of non-violence, the power of peace — Mahatma Gandhi.
There are so many types of power, aren’t there? The type of power we hear so much about these days is the power of violence — it’s an abrupt, forceful, and definitely harmful power.
Gandhi saw it another way — he saw a kind of power that is constant, unyielding but at the same time, loving and peaceful. This marvelous leader of the nonviolence movement in India, championed the belief that nonviolence is the law for all humanity and that it takes greater strength to use peaceful resistance to achieve your ends than to resort to brute force.
According to Gandhi: “Power rightly exercised must sit light as a flower, no one should feel the weight of it.” Calling himself a “practical idealist,” he believed in facing injustice in the world by having the courage to love and show “ahimsa”, selflessness, which he wrote — brought “delight” to his life. By following the teachings of Gandhi, we can learn to recognize the subtle power of nonviolence to bring a sense of peace to our lives and the lives of others.
Born in India, on October 2,1869 as Mohandas Gandhi, he began his spiritual search for truth and eventually earned the name Mahatma, meaning “great soul.” He lived for several years in South Africa, and while there he studied the works of many different religions as well as the literary works of writers such as Tolstoy and Thoreau. This study led him to forego the pursuit of wealth and seek a life of self-improvement. During this time he began to experience discrimination. He chose to react to it by organizing peaceful marches, community meetings and boycotts, which often led to his arrest.
“A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”
~~~ Mohandas Gandhi

When he returned to India, he created a highly successful system of nonviolent protest to win independence from the British. Using fasting, prayer and a stubborn resolve not to hate the British, his legacy has made a lasting impression on people all over the world. Gandhi believed that, “Hate is the subtlest form of violence. We cannot be really nonviolent and yet have hate in us.”

For Gandhi, the ultimate end of nonviolence was an enlightened world, in which people would naturally care for one another, without needing to be governed. But, he also realized that this utopian vision was not yet a reality. Therefore, he believed strongly that people should have the courage to defend their visions, but when at all possible, they should do so without causing pain to anyone else. He added that by using the principles of nonviolence, the weak would grow stronger. To Gandhi, it was integral that people always speak their truth but he also believed that, “One should speak the truth in gentle language.”

Gandhi left behind a remarkable legacy. His teachings still affect huge numbers of people today. There is little doubt that his way of believing would have profound universal applications, if only the world leaders could see the truth in those ideals. Gandhi lived by his principles — as should we. The true essence of nonviolence begins with the way we conduct our own private lives and the way we feel about other human beings. As Gandhi taught, we can be powerful and loving. We can speak our personal truth in a way that spreads enlightenment.

If you are a lover of peace and non-violence, then take those beliefs to the voting booth and get out and work for people who see the truth in the ideals of peace.

“Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.” — And — “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”

Give to the Greater Good

Dec 15, 2006 @ 10:24 am by Ron

“Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring.”

~~~ Oscar Wilde
This time of year has a tendency to make it easy to forget that we’re a part of something greater than ourselves — a collective consciousness — the Universe — the greater good — whatever you are comfortable calling it.
Since we have a tendency to forget this fact, we often make decisions in our lives that ignore the responsibility that being a part of this greater good requires. All too often, we make decisions that focus just on the short-term, tangible gain to ourselves without worrying about the long-range consequences. Other times, we merely ignore contributing to the greater good because it seems like “hard work.” The challenge we face is how do we expand our minds so that we’re always aware of the fact that what we do has an effect on others. We need to find ways to make us more aware that our choices can impact the greater good — the greater cause.
If you’re thinking that it’s all about self-sacrifice — it doesn’t have to be. As an example, how about planting a new tree in a community space. As that tree grows, you can enjoy its shade as much as anyone else. Or, think about how the beauty of that tree will make you and others feel when you look at it.
Whenever you are doing something that benefits the greater cause, you are also serving your own greater good. Everything you do for your highest good will benefit the good of all.
“When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.”
~~~ Patanjali

When you know you are serving a greater cause, there is little room for fear and doubt. You know that what you do will benefit others, so there is no way the universe is not going to support your efforts – even if sometimes it may not look that way. Serving the greater cause allows you to live from the space of your own greatness. When you know that what you do can serve a greater cause, you are aware of your power and ability to influence and create change in this world.

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

~~~ Albert Einstein
