Can We Stop Being Afraid?

When I woke up this morning, my mind was, for some reason, focused on many of my fears. It seems that in today’s world we’re faced with a constant atmosphere of fear. Our government is telling us to be afraid — be very afraid — the terrorists can attack you at any moment. The news items, even the local ones, so often promote fear with so much news about the current day’s shootings, robberies, rapes, etc. Is it any wonder that we tend to be a fearful society?
I guess the question in my mind is, “Do we have to live that way?”
Most of the situations, activities, and individuals that tend to frighten us don’t really change that much. They’ll generally always be there. How much these things and people make us fearful doesn’t change that much, either. If someone is afraid of spiders, the spider doesn’t get more ferocious. Our fears, on the other hand, do grow in intensity. Whenever we start to think about and envision everything that might go wrong, that’s when our fear begins to magnify. Sometimes, even the tiniest flicker of anxiety can develop into a full-blown terror that can affect us mentally, physically and even get us to the point where we’re paralyzed. That spider can become a real monster if we focus on our fear of it.
I’d be willing to bet that most of us have been in that situation more than once in our lives.

Let me ask you this — have you ever faced your fear head-on and walked right through it? I know I have, and the lesson I learned was that my fear wasn’t at all in synch with reality. If I made myself face whatever it was that frightened me, I received a great sense of courageousness and accomplishment as a reward. The same can be true for you. Confronting your trepidations head-on will help you accept the fact that few frightening scenarios will ever live up to the negative disasters that we sometimes play out in our minds.
I’m of the belief that we all experience fear for a reason. I think it’s because when we’re experiencing a fear of something, our senses become sharper, and we can even feel energized during the time of stress. But, there’s a barrier there too. The fear could possibly keep you from a rewarding, life-changing experience. In that time before you actually decide to face your fear your mind is probably filled with an enormous amount of negative emotion.

However, when you gather up your courage and walk right through your fear, no matter what it is, you’ll soon emerge, unscathed, on the other side of that fear. Frequently, you’ll find yourself wondering why you thought it was going to be such a terrible situation in the first place. Do this a few times and, hopefully, you’ll begin to get the idea that all the worry about what might happen is an enormous waste of time and effort. Most of our fears are irrational and won’t ever happen to us. Walking through your fear can mean taking risks and can require both practice and patience. Also, since it can be challenging to act when you’re gripped with fear, start small. Work on the little ones first.
Every time you face up to one of your fears and walk through it you’ll gather more and more strength, courage and confidence. The other neat thing that you should know about this is that you never have to walk through your fears alone — the universe will always offer you some form of aid and support once you let it know what you’re up to. When you face up to your fears with courage, you’ll find that you own self-confidence, your own faith in yourself, will grow by leaps and bounds.
