Self-Sabotage
“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.”~~~ Eleanor Roosevelt
I have been a fairly disciplined guy since 1983 when I had my second heart attack. At that time I made a decision to change my lifestyle because I didn’t want to die. I knew that if I kept living the way I was, my choice would have been to leave the planet in the near future.
Here I am, 24 years later, and I’m still being careful about what I eat, and how much I exercise — most of the time. I haven’t smoked since 1983 and I only drink in moderation. Yet, there are periods of time where I don’t make good choices. I have a feeling that happens to many of us, right?

We all know what’s best for us in our lives. We know the difference between a good relationship and a bad one. We all know the difference between foods that are healthy and those that aren’t. Yet, for some strange reason, we find ourselves making wrong choices — one right after the other. Maybe we’re hanging out with someone who leaves us feeling drained. Maybe we make the choice to go for fast food rather than a salad. Maybe we stop taking vitamins or doing our meditation even though we feel so much better when we do.
The sad part is that, most of the time, we don’t know why we make these wrong choices — we don’t even know we’re doing it — we just do.
“I believe that we are solely responsible for our choices, and we have to accept the consequences of every deed, word, and thought throughout our lifetime.”~~~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
What I want to write about today is that if this describes you, like it describes me, it’s vital that we look into ourselves to see why we’re doing this. It’s important that we find out.
I did meditate on this yesterday and again this morning, and I came to the conclusion that when we choose that which is not good for us, there is some deep seated part of us that doesn’t want to heal. (I know, many of you are going to say — “No way, Ron! That’s not me!”) Okay, maybe you’re right, but have you ever made an excuse for making the wrong choice? Something like you didn’t have the time — or perhaps you were tired and didn’t have the energy to do the healthy thing — or maybe it was because the good choice would have cost more than the bad choice.
There is a part of me that believes the real truth to be that when we don’t take care of ourselves we are falling prey to self-sabotage. It’s something that happens subconsciously. We don’t even notice that we’re doing it until after we’ve done it, whatever “it” is. The important thing to realize is that this very part of us that resists our healing is the part that most needs our attention and love. Once we see that this part is working against us, that’s when we can bring it into our consciousness and begin to deal with it.
“Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.”~~~ Robert F. Bennett
I know that in my own case, that part of me that gets off track is “caving in” to food choices that I know are harmful to me. The fact that I’m now aware that I’m self-sabotaging in this area is a major step towards fixing it.
Once we recognize that we’re not making healthy choices — whether it’s mental health — physical health — or spiritual health — once we’re awake to what is actually happening — then we’re ready to start repairing that part of us. We can begin to meditate on it. We can begin to write about it in a journal (or in a blog!). Maybe we can talk about it with a trusted friend. Once we bring this self-sabotage out into the open we will see that we now have the means to find the power to put it to rest.
It may not be an immediate fix, although it could be. But it may require some work on your part. Just remember, don’t get angry with that part of you that resists healing. Rather, learn to love it and give it your attention and gently teach it how to turn around. So often we learn to fear our weaknesses. Turn that fear into love, and you’ll find that better choices will come.
“We need to teach the next generation of children from Day One that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind’s greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear.”~~~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
