How’s Your Balance?
“Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.”~~~ Brian Tracy
Over the past few days I’ve been giving some serious thought to taking on a couple of new projects. I’ve known for years that one of the elements of life that I need to keep under control is stress. As is true for many people, my body reacts to stressful situations by constricting my arteries. I recently had to go through another heart surgery because of some artery problems. Sure! I know that some of it is caused by age, but I also know that stress fits into the picture as well.
How do we know when we’ve reach our limits?
How do we know when it’s alright to take on another new responsibility or two?
How do we achieve that delicate balance between taking care of ourselves, and taking care of all our other obligations?.
These are the questions that I’m asking myself today. One of the most difficult things for me, (and I suspect for many of you as well) is achieving that balance that allows for our own good health and also fulfilling the obligations of our lives — our families — our work — and our play. It’s so easy to suddenly find ourselves having made promises, or having accepted obligations that cause us to lose track of our own needs. The part we tend to forget is that we have to take care of ourselves if we want to have the energy to take care of others. We need to have enough water in our own well so that we can offer a drink to others who may be thirsty.
I do a lot of the housework in my life because, as a writer, I work at home.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the demands of home life because they never stop. There’s always one more thing you can do, another dish in the sink, a counter that needs wiping, laundry that’s piled up, or grocery shopping that needs to get done. If you don’t set some boundaries, you’ll find yourself on an endless journey of housework and doing for others. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself feeling like you’re hanging on to the end of a rope and sapped of enough energy to be able to hang on.
“Problems arise in that one has to find a balance between what people need from you and what you need for yourself”~~~ Jessye Norman
The secret here is to not let yourself get to that point. If you wait until you’re out of gas before you fill your tank, you’ll end up having to call for help to get you to the gas station. Why not schedule in your self-care time every day? Even Buddha insisted that he have one hour completely to himself every single day.
Before you send me a bunch of emails about how that’s not always possible — I agree — it isn’t a reality every day, day-after-day. Stuff happens!
Do you know that there are still ways to grab that self-time? I call it retreating inward — energetically. This can be a lifesaver. Everyone, no matter what their circumstances, can always find five or ten minutes to just close their eyes and breathe deeply. I’ve even found it possible to go into a meditation in those few moments.
“Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away.”~~~ Barbara De Angelis
(Note: I feel the same is true for men.)
In my own life, it’s nearly always possible to set aside a full hour for myself each day. In my hour, I choose to meditate. You might choose to do something else. The purpose for this hour is to do something different. Find something to do that takes you away from your usual routines. It may be as simple as a relaxing walk or reading a few chapters of a good book. Perhaps you’ll have time to get a massage or have lunch with a friend.
Making the effort to balance your life so that there is a time in every day that’s just yours will help to give you the energy you need to take care of your other obligations.
Now I better get back to deciding what new projects I will have the energy to fit into my life.
“A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.”~~~ William Arthur Ward
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
