Meditation — Look to This Day!

Feb 28, 2008 @ 09:26 am by Ron

“Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn!
Look to this Day!
For it is Life, the very Life of Life.
In its brief course lie all the
Verities and Realities of your Existence.
The Bliss of Growth,
The Glory of Action,
The Splendor of Beauty;
For Yesterday is but a Dream,
And To-morrow is only a Vision;
But To-day well lived makes
Every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness,
And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope.
Look well therefore to this Day!
Such is the Salutation of the Dawn!”

~~~ Kalidasa
In last week’s issue of this blog we talked about how our lives are caught in what Buddha calls the “wheel of suffering”. This suffering is caused in us because we are constantly being controlled by the way our mind thinks. We’re never truly satisfied with things as they are, so we keep pushing for that “something else” that we think will make us happy. The important thing about coming to the realization that this suffering exists, is that there is a way to end it. The Buddha’s most important teachings were focused on ways to end the suffering he had experienced and had seen in other people.
Last week I included a short video to listen to as you meditate. Here is another one (about 7 minutes long) that will play some quiet, peaceful meditation music for you. I hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget to turn on your speakers. Just click the “Play” button — and then you can continue reading today’s article as you listen. When you’re done reading, play it again as you do one of your meditation sessions for today. (hint-hint — again!)
The Buddha saw that life is made up of four aspects: impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and peace.
In today’s article I’d like to give you some of my own impressions about impermanence and what it means in our lives. Traditional Buddhist teaching states that impermanence is one of the major sources of human suffering. Some of the others are craving or desire and ignorance.
The fact that impermanence is on the list isn’t too hard to understand. We’re all pretty much aware of the fact that we’re going to go through the stages of life that include birth, growth, sickness, old age, and death. There are also all sorts of other random and accidental occurrences that involve change and loss – we lose jobs, girlfriends and boyfriends, our waistlines change, we may lose hair (in some places — while as we age we tend to grow it in other places). The house burns down or the mortgage company forecloses, our car gets totaled or stolen or repossessed. Our daughters and sons who were once so sweet and compliant have suddenly taken to sassing us all the time. So it’s easy to perceive impermanence as a whole lot of trouble – and certainly a source of suffering.
“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.”
~~~ Robert Frost

But there’s a twist here that we tend to overlook when we talk about impermanence – and that is that impermanence causes suffering only when we think of it that way. If you really look at what the Buddha had to say on this subject you would see that he said it was our resistance to the concept of impermanence that causes us to suffer – not the impermanence itself. It’s when we want something to remain the same – when we resist the fact that something is bound to change in some way – that’s when we suffer.

There are many factors of impermanence that we don’t resist – nor is there suffering involved in them. For example, we see the sun rise, only to set and then rise again. We see rain falling from the skies – flowing into the streams and riverbeds then out into the oceans only to rise back up into the skies and fall again as rain somewhere else. How about the changing of the seasons? That’s not such an awful thing. Even if you don’t like one of the seasons, it will change – and that’s a thing of joy. And let’s face it, we have to breathe out in order to breathe in again. Even when we’re hurting or sad, the inevitability of impermanence can be a blessing. It is true that we will find that our sorrow will evolve into something less devastating. There will be another aspect to our grieving that will cause our spirit to lift. When we do learn to smile again, it will be because of the blessing of impermanence.

“Oh, this is the joy of the rose: / That it blows, / And goes.”

~~~ Willa Cather
Each of us has created an identity for ourselves. This identity is made up of all the things we have seen, heard, read, have had taught to us, have learned on our own, thoughts we’ve had and beliefs we hold to be true. We spend our days doing everything we can to try to keep this identity happy. It’s this struggle to satisfy this idea of our identity that causes the suffering Buddha talks about. It’s the learned habit that keeps us in this place of bewilderment. We’re constantly struggling to find that place where everything will be “just right”. Our ego-thinking has us running on speed, need and greed. We worry way too much.
Our goal in life seems to be to give “me” a good time – to keep “me” as young as possible for as long as possible. However, our pleasures don’t last – they have a way of turning into something else that isn’t pleasurable. The inevitable truth is that we will all go through the same things, birth, growth, sickness, old age and death. That’s the plan.
I read somewhere (I don’t recall where) that it’s fine to have the pleasures of eating good food, reading good books, listening to great music and eating ice cream. However, once we understand what’s going on in this mind of ours, we’ll learn that the ice cream isn’t happiness. We’ll learn that it’s our true nature to be happy – even without the ice cream. Meditation is the way to discover this about who we truly are.
Be still — listen and focus on your breath and let all those thoughts fade away. There’s true reality in the silence.
“Life is only transient.
Youth, once gone, doesn’t return.
Days are not the same as other days.
So why are people cruel?”
~~~ Hla Stavhana

If you’re new to us here, be sure read the other articles about meditation. You can find links for them over in the left sidebar under the “Recently Posted” section. They all have a title starting with the word, “Meditation”. Don’t forget, spend at least 10 minutes twice each day meditating. Meditate for longer if you can. If you’ve been doing 10 minutes, take it up to 15. The longer you can maintain your focus on just your breath, the better.

And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …

You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.

You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.

Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

Meditation — Ever Feel Bewildered?

Feb 21, 2008 @ 09:22 am by Ron

“Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity.”

~~~ Albert Einstein
I wasn’t sure how many of these articles I would be writing on the topic of meditation, but it seems as though the more I write about it, the more I have to write about. So, today’s article will continue with our discussion about this wonderful practice and talk more about what it can do for your life. I would also expect that there will be several more of these in the weeks to come. I keep learning more and more about it — and — as I learn I feel a need to share it with you.
I’ve also included a short video (about 7 minutes) that will play some excellent meditation music for you as you do your practice today. I hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget to turn on your speakers. Just click the “Play” button — and then you can continue reading today’s article as you listen. When you’re done reading, play it again as you do one of your meditation sessions for today. (hint-hint!)
Today I wanted to talk about why we seem to be in a state of bewilderment, to some degree, most of the time. When we look at our lives, what do we find that we’re doing?
It seems as though we keep moving from one place, or one thought, or one lifestyle to another, searching for lasting happiness and inner peace. There seems to be something empty in us that we’re trying to fill.
We know we want to feel good, but every time we do something to make us feel good, it doesn’t last. We keep looking and looking but that sense of true satisfaction never seems to come. We’re looking for that missing piece and never seem to find it. Whether we realize it or not, we truly do want to learn some basic truth about our lives. We want to be able to see the bigger picture about the universe and our place in it.
I believe that meditation is the best way to achieve this knowledge.
Since I’m a Buddhist, I tend to follow a learning path based on the teachings of the Buddha. The Buddha saw that life is made up of four aspects: impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and peace. He saw that we all live a life of suffering because we constantly keep banging our heads against this wall of reality. We always want our lives to be different than what they are. We tend to spend our lives spinning our wheels. We even have this saying that, “What goes around, comes around”. In Buddhist language this is known as samsara – or the circle of suffering.
“People in this world look at things mistakenly, and think that what they do not understand must be the void. This is not the true void. It is bewilderment…”
~~~ Miyamoto Musashi

We’re always living for tomorrow, or we’re hanging around in the past. Whether that means we’re anticipating a promotion at work – or our retirement – or a new and better job — or perhaps we’re going through the “should-a – would-a – could-a” routine of wishing we had done something differently in the past. We keep going around the circle hoping that the next time we do something it will be better than it was before. We seem to spend so much time protecting ourselves from the bad that we completely ignore the good.

Even when we’re feeling some happiness, it doesn’t seem to take too long before we’re shifting our focus onto something that causes us stress of some kind. This is what Buddha described in the first Noble Truth – the truth that there will be suffering, bewilderment, pain and dissatisfaction in our lives. We’re stuck on this wheel of suffering.

“After his experiences as a prince and as a wandering monk, the Buddha had learned that all people have one thing in common: if they think about their own life, or look at the world around them, they will see that life is full of suffering.

Suffering, he said, may be physical or mental. The Buddha’s most important teachings were focused on a way to end the suffering he had experienced and had seen in other people. His discovery of the solution began with the recognition that life is suffering. This is the first of the Four Noble Truths.”

(Note: We’ll be getting into the other Noble Truths as we continue with these articles on meditation in the weeks to come.)

We see the world as a place where if we just do something once more – give ourselves one more chance to get it right, we’ll be okay. It’s our minds that are convincing us that this is the way to feel better. It’s our minds that encourage us to form opinions and make judgments. It’s the ego-thinking that’s creating all this restlessness, and until we learn to understand how the ego works, this mind of ours will continue to fool us into thinking that this is just how it is. The beauty is that once we recognize that this is where the problem lies, we will have taken the first huge step towards finding our true self. Many Buddhists refer to this as an awakening — or an enlightenment.

“There are many paths to enlightenment. Be sure to take one with a heart.”

~~~ Lao Tzu
Again, the best way to begin this training process for moving forward with learning about why we’re so bewildered all the time, is to meditate. Be still — listen and focus on your breath and let all those thoughts fade away. There’s true reality in the silence.
Meditation — Planting Flowers on Rocks
Feb 14, 2008 @ 09:08 am by Ron
“Karma moves in two directions. If we act virtuously, the seed we plant will result in happiness. If we act non-virtuously, suffering results.”
~~~ Sakyong Mipham

Today is Valentine’s Day here in the USA. I don’t know if folks in other countries observe this rather unusual holiday, but for us here, it’s one more excuse to buy flowers, candy and jewelry for people we love. If you’ve been a reader here for any length of time, you already know that I have a problem with why we have to set aside one day out of the year to show love and devotion. Why don’t we think to do that 24/7/365?

love, spiritual, peace, meditation, Buddhism, balance

I better get off that soap box and move on with today’s article!

We’ve been talking about meditation — and how the practice of meditation might be a good thing in our lives. We’ve talked about the reason most people meditate is to find inner peace, even if that goal is attained for only a moment or two. We talked about why we’re always looking for something else — something better — something that will make us feel happier?

We also began thinking about the possibility that it just might be our minds that are holding us back from finding a lasting inner peace — our “little” mind — or as I like to refer to it, our “ego-mind”. Gaining control of that ego-mind might be a possible solution to tapping into the soul of us — our true essence — the place where the wisdom, love and compassion of the universe can be found.

“The greatest gift is to give people your enlightenment, to share it. It has to be the greatest.”

~~~ Buddha
In keeping with Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d tell you about the analogy that Sakyong Mipham talks about in one of his books that I’ve read, “Turning the Mind Into and Ally“. He writes mostly about the difficulties of bringing the teachings of Buddhism into a Western culture. He says it’s a lot like trying to plant flower seeds on a rock and expecting them to grow.
These flower seeds, if planted in fertile soil, would produce the blooms of compassion, wisdom, clarity and joy in our lives. If these seeds could blossom on the rock of our ego-mind, they could grow into these attributes and become our way of living our lives. The flower seeds need openness and softness in order to grow.
“There are many paths to enlightenment. Be sure to take one with a heart.”
~~~ Lao Tzu

The rock, on the other hand, is like the rigidity, the solidness of our bewildered ego-minds. Our goal is to find out how to plant these flower seeds in the rocky soil and make them grow. This won’t happen unless we have the right conditions. We need to find ways to soften our minds, our hearts and our ways of living.

We live in a culture that dictates that our personal comfort is our highest goal — it’s what we seem to desire more than anything. We keep telling ourselves that we need to slow down, we need to learn to be more compassionate, but because we’re so set in our ways, because we have a tendency to want what we want when we want it, these softer attributes often seem unattainable. We’re not willing to be flexible.

We’re learning about the softness of the flower — we know it exists – but we question our ability to achieve it because it’s just too hard to do – and since it’s not easy we tend to say, “Ah, the heck with it!”

We’re trying to grow a flower on a rocky soil, but we haven’t prepared the garden. We haven’t trained our minds. Getting the garden ready takes some effort. We have all this weeding, and hoeing, and raking and watering to do to get the earth softened up so it will accept our flower seeds.

Guess what?

This preparation is done by peacefully abiding in meditation.

Our society and our culture is hard. It focuses on materialism, selfishness, greed, and envy. We seem to want to choose aggression to deal with problems rather than love and compassion. All the lessons on how to turn this around are always available to us. We just have to learn how to tune into them. The way to learn to dial into these lessons is to bring meditation into our lifestyle. This is how we will learn to gain control over our ego-minds and make it possible for the flowers of love and compassion to bloom.
