It’s time to take a short break from our series of articles about meditation to tell you about the wonderful lineup of films for May, 2008, with the Spiritual Cinema Circle. This is a great time to think about joining me in this great program. It’s especially great because this is the month where we celebrate Mother’s Day. What a wonderful gift this could be for your Mom. Just think, fresh new films every month — that she can keep. This could be the gift that keeps on giving, month after month.
And just think — when Mom’s finished watching the films, she might even decide to share them with you!! Isn’t that a great deal.
I hope you’ll take a look at the offerings for May, 2008, and find out what an amazing program this is. Just click this button to learn more.
Here’s another thing to think about for any of you who have joined me in the Eckhart Tolle series of webinars on the Internet. If you click anywhere in the highlighted paragraph below, it will take you to a site where you can learn more.
Three-Fifty: This hilarious short film takes us into the world of two video store clerks who are tired of people arguing over late fees and a little nervous about keeping their customers loyal in the age of digital downloads.
Body and Soul; Diana and Kathy: In the most touching documentary the SCC has ever had the privilege to program, we meet Diana and Kathy, activists, best friends, two parts who make a whole. They met almost 40 years ago in a home for the physically and mentally challenged and have been taking care of each other ever since while fighting for rights for those with disabilities. You will never forget these two incredible women and the difference they’ve made on the planet.
Feathers to the Sky: Filmed in Uruguay, this beautiful short film depicts a young girl, living with her disabled grandfather, who is forced to sell `feathers’ (dyed marsh weeds) to support them both while she dreams of going to school with the other children in the village.
And, here is the feature film for May, 2008. Guarding Eddy. It’s a beautiful story and one that is sure to live in your heart and mind for some time.
Guarding Eddy: This touching feature is based on the true story of 18 year-old Eddy Patterson, an autistic sports fanatic who dreams of playing pro-basketball. After running away to Los Angeles, Eddy lands in a homeless shelter where he meets pro-player Mike Jeffreys, who had given up on his own dream of the NBA because of a knee injury. The two men teach each other important lessons while discovering real friendship and a rebirth of possibility in their lives. A beautiful story that reminds us that we all face our challenges no matter how talented we seem to be, and we can all use a little help to stay on track.
Just click on any of the photos for the films — or the banner below to learn more about how you can become a part of the Spiritual Cinema Circle for yourself, or as a gift for your Mom this Mother’s Day.
Thanks for letting me interrupt our regular weekly series. I’ll be back next week with our next article about meditation. Have a great week.
“Having spent the better part of my life trying either to relive the past or experience the future before it arrives, I have come to believe that in between these two extremes is peace.”

Moving into that place where we can see and hear what our Heart — what the Essence of us is telling us about who we are — that’s what we learned last week. We also learned that the best way to be in that place — that place we now know is the Present — the Now — is through meditation. There are two places where we can go for answers — one is to our ego-mind — and the other is to the stillness of the Now. Only one of these will give us the Truth — and that is the Now.
===================================================
But first, here is your meditation for this week. This is a guided meditation to help you to deepen the silence within you. It’s about 10 minutes long. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.

====================================================
What are we doing when we meditate? Or, perhaps the question should be, “What is the reason, or the goal, of taking this time to meditate?” The answer is quite simple — we want to cease thinking for a while and spend some time experiencing the stillness — the silence within us.
Most of the time we are thinking. Most of the time our moments are completely absorbed with thoughts of the past or concerns about the future. This is what happens when we are identified with the ego-mind.
Thinking takes the place of experiencing. When we spend time in meditation, we get to turn this around. We get to be in the present — in the moment — in the Now — we get to be with what is. And, what is, in any particular moment is all there is.
Are we completely without thoughts during this time? No. Thinking will still be happening, but one of the reasons why we meditate is so that we can learn not to identify ourselves with the thoughts. We are human beings and thinking can’t be completely stopped.
So then the question becomes — since we are humans and we can’t stop the thinking, how do we ever enter the present moment — the Now? The answer is that the Now is all there is. There is always only the present moment. We are always in the present moment — we can’t possibly BE anywhere else. The past is gone — the future hasn’t arrived — there is only Now.
“People are always asking about the good old days. I say, why don’t you say the good now days?”
~~~Robert M. Young
We all have a choice as to how we wish to relate to the Now. We can choose to be happy with it — or we can choose to be in conflict with it. Since the present moment is our life, we can decide what sort of relationship we want to have with our life. It seems to make good sense to be content with what is — to be friends with it. This decision to be friends with the present is a moment by moment decision — until we reach a point where that is our natural way of being. The more we embrace the Now, the less control our ego-mind will have over us.
Meditation is the ideal way to teach ourselves how to react positively to the present. It is a time of stillness. It is a time when we’re already open to accepting the present and when we are focused on something other than our discursive thoughts. It’s a time when we’re relaxed, quiet and peaceful.
“Opportunities fly by while we sit regretting the chances we have lost, and the happiness that comes to us we heed not, because of the happiness that is gone.”
~~~Jerome K. Jerome, The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, 1889

If you’re new to us here, be sure read the entire series about meditation. If you look on the upper left of the sidebar, you’ll see a list of the categories. Click the one called “Meditation” and you’ll be able to read the articles you missed. They start with the January 24, 2008 post.
Do include meditation in your daily life. If you’re just starting out, make it a 10 minute meditation. If you’ve been doing this for a while, try to do a minimum of 20 minutes. The longer you can maintain your focus on just your breath, the better.

And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.

“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.”
~~~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Last week we were talking about how the ego plays these tricks on us and gets us to believe that the things we’re learning that will help us to be in the Peaceful Present, are not going to work — or that they take too much time — or that the person we’re learning from isn’t doing a good job, etc. We’re starting to get a clearer picture, though — it’s that the ego doesn’t want to lose its power over us — so it will do everything it can to convince us that what we’re doing isn’t going to help.
===================================================
But first, here is your meditation for this week. This is a guided meditation to help you focus on your breath. It’s about 10 minutes long. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.
Here’s a link if the video doesn’t start when you click the “PLAY” button:
Let’s face the facts — it’s the ego’s job to find fault with our teachers, their teachings and their methods. It’s the ego’s job to convince us that meditation is just a huge waste of time. Whenever we find ourselves analyzing, judging or picking things apart, we can be sure that it’s our ego doing its thing. It wants us to think of ourselves as separate from others. It wants us to think we’re different than someone else. It just doesn’t want us to know the Truth.
When we think about discrimination, there are actually two different sides to how we can discriminate. There’s the type of discrimination that comes from within us — from the essence of who we are — and that’s the discrimination that helps us to determine the false from the true — the Real from the Illusion. The discrimination of the ego is not able to see Real Truth because it has no way of seeing that Truth. It can only know when there is something we’re doing that is making it lose some of its power.
Only the essence of who we are — the Heart of us — has the ability to discern the Real Truth. All the ego can manage to do is to make it difficult for us to see the Heart’s message by distracting us with its endless mind-chatter.
“Don’t let the past steal your present.”
~~~Cherralea Morgen
One of the best ways for us to see and hear what the Heart of us is offering in the way of answers to who we truly are, is through the practice of meditation. This is, I feel, the best way to learn that there is something other than our egoic mind that has answers to the knowledge we seek. We need to stop listening to all the excuses that our ego-mind keeps giving as to why we can’t meditate. None of those reasons are valid — they’re only excuses. When we ignore these excuses that are in our mind, we can go into meditation and quiet the chatter for a while. When we’re meditating we can enjoy an experience that is completely different than the usual rambling of our thoughts.
Until we take this important step of starting a daily practice of meditation, we will be controlled by our ego. Until we take this step into meditation practice, we will have little awareness that there is something happening in the universe of us other than what we think. It’s time for the essence of us — the Heart of us — to take control. Step into the Heart within you and enjoy the experience of seeing the Now — this vastness of who we are — the Alive, Peaceful, Present Moment.
“You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.”
~~~Jan Glidewell
