Big Picture — Earth Charter Principles
Big Picture — Earth Charter Principles
“Earth is all the home we have!”~~~ Satish Kumar
Last week you saw me get carried away with my experience at the Earth Charter Conference in Vermont in 1991. The closing words on that post had to do with what we should do once our basic needs have been met. We need to learn to focus on being more rather than having more.
In last week’s post, I mentioned the man who led our silent pilgrimage the day of our celebration of The Earth Charter, Satish Kumar.
That’s his picture on the right at his home in Devon, England this year. He has aged since I saw him in 1991, but even in a photo, his aura of peace shines brilliantly.

On his walk for peace from the grave of Mahatma Gandhi to the grave of John F. Kennedy, one of the countries he passed through on his journey was Russia. Here’s his description about one of his experiences there…
“We then came to the Soviet Union. One day we were walking and carrying our banner and distributing a few leaflets in Russian to people, and we met two women on the road. When they read our leaflet and saw our banner, they started to talk to us and ask questions. And as we walked they said, “We work in the tea factory. Why don’t you come in and have a cup of tea?” So we said, “Yes, that would be fine. It is lunch time, and anyway, anytime is tea time.”So we went in and had a cup of tea and talked to various workers at their tea factory. Suddenly one of these women got up, quickly rushed out of the room, and came back in a few minutes with four small packets of tea. She said, “I know you must travel light, but these four packets are very, very important. You must carry them. And you mustn’t drink this tea.”
We said, “Why are we to carry them?”
She said, “I would like you to carry one to our Premier, one to the President of France, one to the Prime Minister of England, and one to the President of the United States of America. And I want you to take our message from this factory that if ever they get a mad thought of pushing the nuclear button to please stop for one minute and have a fresh cup of tea from these packets. And then they will have a moment to think and contemplate, and they will realize that the people who are producing tea, working in the factories, working in the fields, working in normal life, leading an ordinary life, are not their enemies. We are ordinary people, and we have done nothing to deserve nuclear attack.”
Before I leave the subject of The Earth Charter, I’d like to share with you the principles of that Charter.
Principle One: Respect Earth and life in all its diversities.
Principle Two: Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion and love.
Principle Three: Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable and peaceful.
Principle Four: Secure Earth’s bounty and beauty for present and future generations.
Principle Five: Protect and restore the integrity of Earth’s ecological systems, with special concern for biological diversity and the natural processes that sustain life.
Principle Six: Prevent harm as the best method of environmental protection and, when knowledge is limited, apply a precautionary approach.
Principle Seven: Adopt patterns of production, consumption, and reproduction that safeguard Earth’s regenerative capabilities, human rights, and community well-being.
Principle Eight: Advance the study of ecological sustainability and promote the open exchange and wide application of the knowledge acquired.
Principle Nine: Eradicate poverty as an ethical, social, and environmental imperative.
Principle Ten: Ensure that economic activities and institutions at all levels promote human development in an equitable and sustainable manner.
Principle Eleven: Affirm gender equality and equity as prerequisites to sustainable development and ensure universal access to education, health care, and economic opportunity.
Principle Twelve: Uphold the right of all, without discrimination, to a natural and social environment supportive of human dignity, bodily health, and spiritual well-being, with special attention to the rights of indigenous peoples and minorities.
Principle Thirteen: Strengthen democratic institutions at all levels, and provide transparency and accountability in governance, inclusive participation in decision making, and access to justice.
Principle Fourteen: Integrate into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values and skills needed for a sustainable way of life.
Principle Fifteen: Treat all living beings with respect and consideration.
Principle Sixteen: Promote a culture of tolerance, nonviolence, and peace.
I hope you can see that this organization has something important to say for all of us. You can learn much more about The earth Charter by visiting their web site at: http://www.earthcharter.org. You can read the actual Charter there and you’ll see the work of The Earth Charter in action today.
It’s up to us to make sure this work doesn’t go to waste.
I’m not done with talking about the Big Picture, so come back next week when this important discussion will continue. Invite your friends. We need many more people to be listening and sharing.

I meditate to help keep me sane in this crazy world of today. Those glimpses we get of peace, love, acceptance and happiness when we’re meditating will soon grow into more than glimpses if we keep practicing. Keep those feelings alive. A meditation can be as simple as one, deep, conscious breath. When something happens in one of your moments to cause you to suffer, just stop and take one of those breaths and remember, “This too shall pass!” Another thing that is wonderful, especially at this time of year, is to have a fresh flower where you work. Just stop from time-to-time and look at it — don’t label it — don’t judge it — just be with it for a couple of moments. It really does work. I’m looking at mine as I write this.

If you’re new to us here, I’ve written a series of articles about meditation. If you look on the upper left of the sidebar, you’ll see a list of the categories. Click the one called “Meditation” and you’ll be able to read the articles you missed. They start with the January 24, 2008 post. The video meditations that I included with the earlier articles may no longer function. I’m sorry about that, but those are out of my control. Hopefully, they’ll all still be working.

Namaste!
I share these words for you in closing — remember these words …
“Be happy now, my dear friends. Today is all we have. Be good to one another. Take comfort in whatever spirituality you are so inclined (or not), and learn to be happy despite your circumstances. Accept what is. Follow your path; pursue your dreams. Work hard, love your family. Be generous and forgiving. Do it today, while you still have the flicker of life, for one day your own candle will dim.”
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”~~~ Buddha
