Are You Limiting Yourself?
Are You Limiting Yourself?
“He is able who thinks he is able. ”~~~ Buddha
Have you ever given any thought to just how awkward it is to being a human being? With most decisions we make — maybe with every decision we make, there is the potential for doubting ourselves. Everytime this glimmer, or perhaps more than a glimmer of self-doubt arises in our minds, we’re opening the door to feelings of insecurity.

Insecurity! Talk about a complex emotion. You have an amazing mix of inadequacy, isolation, fear, and hopelessness in just about equal parts. I just went through a session of dealing with insecurity today. I did a video-movie of my step-granddaughter’s 10th birthday party and decided to put some copies of it in different places on the Internet. This was a first attempt at making a movie from the video clips I took with a a new camcorder. One of the places I put the video was on Vimeo. (You can see it here: http://vimeo.com/5290458)
When I looked around at some of the other videos posted at Vimeo, my feelings of inadequacy grew even more.
However, as I started to examine how this emotion was playing me, I began to realize that this feeling of insecurity could prevent me from filling my potential by bringing in defensive actions such as imposing self-limitations. That didn’t make a lot of sense to me since I know the perception of being inadequate is not a valid perception. The reason why I was feeling unconfident (is that a word?) and unsure of myself, was because I was making the judgment that it was so.
When we feel insecure, we not only perceive ourselves as incapable of meeting life’s challenges but also fraudulent and unworthy of true happiness. We move through life plagued by a sense that others have judged us and found that we are lacking. As a result, we are robbed of our personal power and rendered unable to feel positive about the choices we make.
Whenever you find yourself feeling insecure, try to figure out what’s causing it. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that as a child you rarely received positive reinforcement. Perhaps in your working life you don’t receive acknowledgment of the work you do well. Oftentimes, the people closest to you have a tendency to take you and your efforts for granted. When you have pinpointed the origin of your insecurity, focus on your abilities. The more you utilize your personal power — by taking risks, boldly facing challenges, and acting decisively — the stronger it will grow.
Remember that insecurity is not objective. Rather, it is an emotional interpretation of your value unconsciously based on doubt, shame, and fear. As you overcome those underlying emotions through courageous action and copious self-love, you’ll discover that you are capable of achieving more than you ever thought possible.
Be well — be in peace,
