With so much talk in the news and on the internet about a possible increase in the number of young men and women being sent into dangerous situations, my thoughts of peace are at an all-time high today. Meditations with a focus on peace are happening around the world. There will be a multitude of people in Washington D.C. tomorrow (January 27, 2007) to make a statement for peace.

There is another symbol of peacefulness that isn’t as prevalent here in America as it is in eastern countries — and that is Tibetan Prayer Flags. You can see them flying at temples, gardens and homes in many places around the world. You can see rows of these bright, colorful flags spreading their waves of blessings to their neighbors every time the wind blows. Several of my friends in Vermont had these flying at their homes.

These beautiful flags are such a gift to everyone who sees them. When they are hung where they will catch the breeze, the wind can carry your blessings, your prayers for peace, health, happiness and enlightenment to others. They are the blessings and prayers of the heart sent to move with the wind.

Tibetan Buddhists for centuries have planted these flags outside their homes and places of spiritual practice for the wind to carry the vibrations of the blessings across the countryside. Prayer flags are said to bring peace, happiness, long life and prosperity to the flag planter and to those in the vicinity where the breezes flow.

Traditionally, they are fastened to eaves or sewn onto ropes to be displayed horizontally or they are fastened to wooden poles for vertical display. They are usually hung in groups of five. The color of the flags have meanings as well — and should be placed in this order — yellow for earth — green for water — red for fire — white for wind, air or cloud — and blue is for space or sky. If the flags are displayed vertically, the yellow flag is at the bottom and the blue is at the top. Horizontal displays can be hung with the order going from either the left or the right.

Prayer flags typically come on ropes to be hung in horizontal displays or printed on long narrow strips of cloth that are tied on vertical poles. They can range in height from about 3 ft to 40 ft or more. Pole flags often have colored streamers or “tongues” that are imprinted with special increasing mantras meant to increase the power of the prayers written on the body of the flag.

Placing prayer flags in and around one’s home or business imparts a feeling of
harmony, increases the spiritual atmosphere and brings to mind the teachings of
peace and enlightenment. By placing prayer flags outdoors their sacred mantras are imprinted on the wind, generating peace and good wishes.

When raising prayer flags proper motivation is important. If they are put up with the attitude of, “I will benefit from doing this” -– that is an ego-centered motivation and the benefits will be small and narrow. If the attitude is, “May all beings everywhere receive benefit and find peace and happiness,” the virtue generated by such motivation greatly increases the power of the prayers.

Tibetan tradition considers prayer flags to be holy. Because they contain
sacred texts and symbols they should be treated respectfully. They should not be
placed on the ground or put in the trash. When disposing of old prayer flags the
traditional way is to burn them so that the smoke may carry their blessings to the heavens.

Prayer flags can be a wonderful gift for yourself or a friend, especially during times of need. Hang a strip of Tibetan prayer flags and, every time the wind blows, you’ll be sharing your prayers, your blessings, and your intentions for peace with the world. I know that I’m going to look around outside and see if there’s a good place to raise some flags here and help to send the prayers of our hearts for peace, health, happiness and enlightenment to our neighbors.
