Enjoy the Age You Are!
“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, ‘A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!’”~~~ Robert Browning
On Wednesday, my wife and I went to the movies. That doesn’t happen often, but I was anxious to see the new Michael Moore film called, “Sicko”. For those of you who are not living in the USA, Michael Moore is a documentarian who has done several films about social issues that need to be changed in this country. This film, “Sicko”, is about our health industry — and — it’s a shame to say — the USA is the only western country where quality health care is not equally available to all people when they need it.

As we were driving home after this film we were asking ourselves, “What can we do?” It didn’t take too long before we came to realize that as long as our elected Congresspeople were “on the take” to the private insurance industry and the pharmaceutical companies, our hands were tied. There is a level of political corruption that would prevent two concerned citizens from doing much of anything to make a real difference. Others, with a lot more power have tried and failed to bring about meaningful change in this area. As usual, money had the control over the welfare of the people.
Then our conversation went to the idea of moving to other countries where universal health care existed — countries like Canada, England and France, for example. As I did some research on that idea this morning I began to feel my age nagging at me. The thoughts of, “I’m too old to do this” — or — “I can’t get involved in all that at my age” began to creep through my mind.
In a way, having my thoughts switch over to age was a good thing, otherwise this blog posting would have ended up as a rant against political corruption. (Maybe, I should add a category for political rants to my blog, since I seem to be thinking along those lines rather often, lately.)
But, for today, I’m going to talk about age and a better way to think about age than what I was doing today.
“Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.”~~~ Groucho Marx
No matter where we are in life, there are wonderful experiences we can savor and new, valuable things to learn and absorb. Every new decade and, in fact, every new year brings with it wisdom and growth, as well as ends and beginnings.
What most of us do, though, is to believe that there is one age that is better than others. I know I was feeling that a younger age was better than where I am today. Then I began to realize that wishing to be younger — or as some younger people do — wishing to be older, is a denial of the joys that have been and the joys yet to be, as well as the beauty of life as it is today. If we try too hard to hold onto an age, we may find it difficult to appreciate the milestones yet to come.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”~~~ George Bernard Shaw
Each new year is a gift from the universe. Each new year has new, exciting and unfamiliar experiences. In our 20s, we can embrace the energy of youth and the learning process, knowing it’s okay to not have all the answers. As we go through the decade of our 30s, we become more self-assured and lose some of that confusion we felt in the last decade. We have fewer fears, become more certain of our values and see the benefits of our new maturity. Our 40s brings more wisdom and we learn to put our knowledge to good use. In our 50s we tend to get our lives in order and even do some reevaluations about what we want and where we’re going. In the 60s, 70,s and I’m sure even in the 80s and 90s, we discover a greater sense of freedom than we have ever known, and can begin to enjoy so much of what we’ve seen and done.
So, even though I may not be able to do anything today about the healthcare crisis in this country, I can try to enjoy the age I am now and utilize whatever wisdom I’ve accumulated to work toward changes for the betterment of everyone.
“That man never grows old who keeps a child in his heart”~~~ Richard Steele, Sr.
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
