Focus on Peace
“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, or establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder the hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”–~~~ Dr. Martin Luther King
Today I have an urgent desire to write about what’s going on in the world relating to violence. As many of you are aware, I am a hard-working advocate for peace. One of the things that recently brought this subject to the minds of so many people was the violence that happened at Virginia Tech. Everybody started to wonder, “What’s the cause?” “Why is this happening?”
Perhaps the following is part of the answer to those questions.
If you stop to think about this for a moment or two, you’ll come to realize that in America, we are flooded with violence, or with items depicting violence at every turn. Look at how popular violent horror films have become. That’s just one example of the type of things our children, and even many adults, find entertaining. In fact, in some of my reading on the Internet, I saw an article about horror films, where one of the producers of this sort of movie said, “the more violent, the better! It sells!”
What about when you’re sitting down for dinner and there on the TV screen are pictures of latest destruction caused by suicide bombers in Iraq. There are even times when the media will show you the bodies of people strewn on the street. What about the evening’s television line-up — how many programs do you and your family watch where the theme is some violent act or a series of such acts? How about some of the video games our kids are playing? Games where the better you are at violence, the better your chance of winning the game? Even the kids cartoons are focused on violence.
Are we becoming programmed to think of all this as “normal?”
Now, think for a moment on the fact that you and I have been listening to the words “war on terror” day after day after day for over half a decade. We have “terror” being brought right into our homes every single day by a media that feels this is the only news there is.
“You cannot solve a problem from the same level of thinking that created it.”~~~ Albert Einstein
When I turn on the TV in the morning to hear the weather, I have to listen to the latest shootings, murders, rapes and other forms of violence before I can see what the weather’s going to be like today. (I know, I really need to learn to find my weather forecast another way.) We are learning to be in constant fear that terror or violence will invade us in more ways than just on the news.
I think the message is loud and clear — we’re obviously doing something wrong here — it’s high time we woke up and did something about it.
“For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time; hatred ceases by love, this is an old rule.”–~~~ from the Buddhist Dhammapada
In his book, “Practical Spirituality”, James Ray wrote a chapter entitled, “Stand ‘FOR’ Something versus ‘AGAINST’ It”.
It’s time we stand FOR Peace.
Don’t be ‘against’ violence — that only puts more of your focus on violence — just be FOR Peace.
Bottom line: The “war on terror” feeds and propagates terror… Violence in our media and in our homes feeds and creates more violence. If we don’t start to turn this around soon, this violence will get worse and worse.
We need to shift our focus. We need to follow the lead from our friends in Great Britain. One of the members of Tony Blair’s cabinet, International Development Secretary Hilary Benn, said they are no longer using the term “war on terror.” According to Benn, “the phrase strengthens terrorists by making them feel part of a bigger struggle.”
Will this change the world? — no — but it sure could help!
Our country is already so focused on the presidential election. Did you know that there are candidates running for this office that are peace-makers? Maybe you do, but how often have you seen those brave people in your mainstream media news coverage of this race? The only time you hear anything about them is if you subscribe to some of the Internet news sources. Sure, you’ve seen them on the televised debate coverage — but what about in the follow-ups? Nada! NOt a word about them.
My wish in writing this blog article today is that some of you will begin to change where you put your focus — and the words in your vocabulary. Stop using words like “war on terror” — or “terror” — or “kill” — or “hate” — or other terms of violence. In fact, this will be the last time I focus one of my articles on violence. Henceforth, I will focus only on peace and things related to peace.
Begin to speak of peace and focus on promoting peaceful solutions to problems – and learn to be more peaceful in your own thoughts and actions. I know, you may think that’s not going to do anything — but — somewhere, someone is going to see you as a peace-maker and want to emulate you. When your consciousness shifts to peace, and that spreads to one other person — and then it spreads to more and more people — eventually our country will begin to think in terms of peace — and one day the world will be focused on peace.
This won’t happen today or tomorrow — but why not start the ball rolling …
“Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.”~~~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be.”~~~ Karen Ravn
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
