Let Your Light Shine!

Dec 13, 2007 @ 09:51 am by Ron

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
—- Used by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural speech —-

~~~ Maryanne Williamson
Do you have a gift that was a part of you when you were born? You’d be amazed at the number of people who will say that they don’t. Yet, there’s no doubt in my mind that each and every one of us was born into this world with at least one unique gift. Every one of us has a light within us that has the potential to make our world a more beautiful place.
love, spiritual, peace, meditation, balance
Every one of us has this wonderfulness within us, but so many of us are reluctant to let it shine. It’s there, but no one can see it — not even ourselves. Usually this is caused by various fears and feelings of inadequacy. If we dare to let our light shine we might be afraid that it will attract attention — or we might face the chance that someone will reject us — or we’re afraid of the responsibilities that may come from success — or people might think that we’re just showing off.
“If you look deep within, you will find a brilliant light. Too many, far too many, squint and turn away from the shine. Let your eyes adjust, and bathe in the radiance.”
Think about it, though — if we hide that light — if we don’t let people see our talents — if we quash our dreams — what are we doing? We’re denying ourselves and a multitude of others some wonderful experiences. Your abilities are a part of who you are and when you take pride in them, you affirm the love, esteem, and trust with which you view yourself. Another great benefit of letting your light shine is that you will grant others permission to do the same so that they too, can enjoy the exploration of their dreams and talents.
So many of us are taught from childhood to hide our innate talents. Sometimes a relative will caution us that if we follow the path of our talent we won’t be able to get a good job. It can also happen where our peers might be envious of our skills and become overly critical. Many parents get after us to not be a show-off and we end up being overly humble.
“We need less posturing and more genuine charisma. Charisma was originally a religious term, meaning “of the spirit” or “inspired.” It’s about letting God’s light shine in us. It’s about a sparkle in people that money can’t buy. It’s an invisible energy with visible effects. To let go, to just love, is not to fade into the wallpaper. Quite the contrary, it’s when we truly become bright. We’re letting our own light shine.”
~~~ Marianne Williamson

What we need to remember is that there is huge difference between showing off and letting your light shine — letting your talent show. When you let the world know what you can do you will become a more complete person — you will become who you truly are. It doesn’t matter what your talent happens to be — you might be a first-rate cook — or a great writer — or a brilliant musician — or a math whiz — whatever it is, you’ll learn that you’re not doing anyone any favors if you hide that talent — that light within you.

What do you do if you’ve hidden your light for so long that it’s just a dim ember? I’d suggest that you make a list of everything you do well. It doesn’t matter if it seems silly, or unimportant, or impractical. Be sure to include in your list those things that you know you could do well, but have never given yourself the chance to do them. Just write it all down. Then, look at your list and think about how you can incorporate some of these things into your daily life. Meditate about it. You won’t need to make a big deal about it. Just quietly go about your life with these gifts and talents added into what you’ve been doing. You can rest assured that if you do this, you will be making a difference in the world.

As Dwight L. Moody says in this quote …

“We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining- they just shine.”

~~~ Dwight L. Moody
Namaste!
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”
  2. […] In the article “Let Your Light Shine” in his inspirational blog TheLeaderInside.com, The author, Ron, does an excellent job of exploring this topic and the different reasons for the “phenomena”. He includes another profound related quote from one of my favorite authors that expresses this very well: We need less posturing and more genuine charisma. Charisma was originally a religious term, meaning “of the spirit” or “inspired.” It’s about letting God’s light shine in us. It’s about a sparkle in people that money can’t buy. It’s an invisible energy with visible effects. To let go, to just love, is not to fade into the wallpaper. Quite the contrary, it’s when we truly become bright.
