Meditation — From the Stillness

“We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.”

~~~ Buddha
Since we devoted this space to a promotion for the Spiritual Cinema Circle last week, we need to get back to our discussion about meditation this week. This week we’re going to talk about finding your way into the stillness of the present moment and how to hear what can come out of that stillness. Sometimes it will be just the feelings of great peace — and other times it may be thoughts that contain real wisdom, love and compassion. As I said before, there are two places where we can go for answers — one is to our ego-mind — and the other is in the stillness of the Now. Only one of these will give us the Truth — and that is the Now.
But first, here is your meditation for this week. This is another guided meditation to help you to deepen the stillness within you. It’s about 10 minutes long. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.
I hope you had a chance to see the offering from Cinema Circle last week. If you missed it, it’s the post right under this one — just scroll down a bit. Take a look and check it out. There’s a short synopsis of all the films coming out in May, 2008. It’s a great idea for a special Mother’s Day gift – a gift that she will be able to enjoy month after month. Now, back to our discussion about meditation …
As I mentioned two weeks ago, we are human beings so we can’t help but think. Thinking is what we do. Even if we’d like to find some way to turn it all off, that’s not going to happen.
There is some good news, though, so read on …
Once you have integrated the practice of meditation into your daily lifestyle and you become more comfortable and experienced with keeping the focus on your breath, you will find that most of the unnecessary thinking will begin to fade somewhat. Yes, it will still crop up — it just won’t be as invasive as it used to be. The thoughts that will remain will be those that have some real value to them. When you’re in a good meditation and you are aware of the stillness of the present the thoughts will almost always be those that show you wisdom, love and compassion.
Usually, when we meditate we are focusing our minds on something other than our thoughts and feelings. However, it is alright to put your attention onto a thought or feeling as long as you don’t become attached to it — or identify yourself with it. When those thoughts and feelings come into your mind and you find yourself leaving the stillness of the present moment and following the thought back to the past or into the future, that’s the signal that you’re identifying with the thought and you need to bring your focus back to the Now. When you can learn to let the thoughts merely float in and can then let them float out again, you will stay in touch with the stillness of the present and know that you’re not identifying with the thought or thoughts.
Remember, there are two “you’s” — there’s the “ego-you” and there’s the “essence-you”. When you go chasing after the thoughts and feelings of the past — or the thoughts and feelings of the future — that’s the “ego-you” doing its thing and identifying with what’s going through your mind and keeping you away from the peace of the present. Your ego will use every trick in the book to keep you under it’s control.
When you can stay in the present — when you’re basking in the stillness of the peacefulness of Now — that’s the “essence-you” — the Real YOU! That’s when you can just watch those intrusive thoughts and feelings float in and then float out again with each breath you take. When you can stay in the present, not only during meditation, but at other times in your daily life, there will be less suffering in your life. You will be more at peace and will feel happier about your life.
We meditate because we want to learn that there is another way of looking at our life’s purpose. We’ve been programmed since birth to identify with the thoughts and feelings of our past and to worry about our future, when all there really is — the only place we can truly be — is right now at this moment. The past is gone — the future doesn’t exist — there is only right now — this present moment. Whatever is happening in your life at this moment — be with it. There’s nothing else you can do, anyway, so just be with it. If you don’t like it — well — remember, “This too shall pass!” And if you love it — Great! But, remember, “This too shall pass!”
Those glimpses we get of peace, love, acceptance and happiness that we get when we’re meditating will soon grow into more than glimpses if we keep practicing. Keep those feelings alive. A meditation can be as simple as one, deep, conscious breath. When something happens in one of your moments to cause you to suffer, just stop and take one of those breaths and remember, “This too shall pass!”
“Turn your mind away from things which are not permanent.”
As I’ve been mentioning in the past few articles, if you aren’t taking the “New Earth” course, I highly recommend it. It’s completely free. All you really have to do is get the book, “A New Earth — Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. You can access the course online at: http://www.oprah.com/obc_classic/webcast/ane_marketing.html. You’ll find everything you need there to get started — and to get caught up. If you happen to have iTunes on your computer, you can also access the course through the podcast link in iTunes. I am taking the course, and I’m on my second reading of the book. For me, this has been life-changing. Check it out. There are now several million people around the world who are taking part in this earthshaking event that is creating a new consciousness on the New Earth.
If you’re new to us here, be sure read the entire series about meditation. If you look on the upper left of the sidebar, you’ll see a list of the categories. Click the one called “Meditation” and you’ll be able to read the articles you missed. They start with the January 24, 2008 post.
Do include meditation in your daily life. If you’re just starting out, make it a 10 minute meditation. If you’ve been doing this for a while, try to do a minimum of 20 minutes. The longer you can maintain your focus on just your breath, the better. And, remember, anytime you take a deep, conscious breath — that’s a breath where you’re putting your focus on that breath — that’s a meditation. Do it often every day — especially when you’re feeling stressed. I guarantee, you’ll find more peace and happiness in your life if you’ll do this.
“Those who really seek the path to Enlightenment dictate terms to their mind. Then they proceed with strong determination.”
Namaste!
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”
