Meditation — The Way to Inner Peace
“Knowing others is wisdom; Knowing the self is enlightenment; Mastering others requires force; Mastering the self needs strength.”Lao Tzu
Other than the last posting which was information about the latest offering for February from the Spiritual Cinema Circle, (see article below) we’ve been writing about meditation and some of the techniques and benefits for making it a part of your daily life.
We talked about how meditation in Western societies has become a way to reduce stress and find relaxation. It is recognized as a way to spend time “in the moment” by shutting off all the mind-chatter that absorbs us most of the time. We also talked about meditation as a way to reduce the effects of various physical ailments. And, we spent some time discussing certain techniques used to meditate.
The goal of meditation for most people who practice it is to attain inner peace.
That’s what I’d like to share with you today. I’ll be writing my thoughts from the perspective of my studies of the teachings of the Buddha.
I have yet to meet anyone who isn’t seeking happiness on some level or other. Why do we do this? What makes us feel as though there has to be “something else” more than what we have in our lives? Could it be that we’ve somehow managed to wander from our roots – from something that is very basic to our hearts and minds? For many of us, life isn’t leading toward the “awakening” or the “enlightenment” that we see mentioned constantly in our studies of Buddhist teachings.
“Self-observation brings man to the realization of the necessity of self-change. And in observing himself a man notices that self-observation itself brings about certain changes in his inner processes. He begins to understand that self-observation is an instrument of self-change, a means of awakening.”~~~ George Gurdjieff
Even if we’re not actively studying the Buddhist teachings, we must feel the need for something. Isn’t that why we’re always looking for something else — something better — something that will make us feel happier? We need to find something that can help us in our ultimate goal – which is to find true happiness and lasting inner peace.
In spite of all the turmoil, hardships and cruelty we see everyday in our world, the true basis of everything is absolutely pure. Our hearts and minds are inherently awake — that is, in an awakened or enlightened state. We just don’t recognize this. We allow our ego-mind to block it out. However, before we can move along on this adventure of becoming awakened people – of living our lives with true joy and happiness – we need to discover this inner secret we all possess.
We need to train our minds through meditation. Meditation can show us our basic goodness.
“To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.”~~~ Buddha
Our minds can be our worst enemy. Think about when you meditate. There you are, focusing on your breath or your mantra, and what happens? Your mind goes wandering off – almost instantly. How about stress? Are we successful at keeping that under control? How often do we strive to be good to the people we love and then turn right around and selfishly put ourselves first?
What’s the reason for all this? It’s our minds. We need to find some way to get control of this ego-mind of ours so that it will quit using us. Buddhist teachings say that we can train our minds through peaceful abiding – through meditation.

We’ll pick this up from this point with our next article. In the meantime, read the other two articles about meditation, (Meditation — Is It Worth It? — January 24th — and — Meditation — The Way to Serenity — January 31st) and spend at least 10 minutes each day meditating. Do more if you can.
“Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.”~~~ Buddha
And, don’t forget to check out the information about the Valentines Day Special from the Cinema Circle. (See the article below from Tuesday, February 5th.)
Namaste!
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”~~~ Buddha
