Perfection As a Goal

“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”

~~~ Anna Quindlen
I‘m still going to leave the short video I made about the Spiritual Cinema Circle — CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD, as a part of this blog for a while yet. I’m continuing to leave it there because I truly believe that it’s something every person — every family — should have in their lives. Also, since the people who become members of the circle during this month (February, 2007) are getting such a fantastic deal, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t keep the video here as a reminder. Plus, some of you may be reading this for the first time — so it’s for you, as well as for those who have been a part of my “blog family” for some time. I’ll take it down in a few days, but I’m hoping more of you will grab it this month — it’s such a great deal!
So click the “Play” button — enjoy the video — and then be sure to come back and read today’s article.
Since so much is being talked about relating to the movie, “The Secret”, I thought I’d continue to show you where you can get a copy of your own. There was a follow-up show on Oprah on 2/16/07 — and she also did an “After the Show” segment on the 17th. Millions of people are learning about it.
Also, take a look at the comment by Rita Jimenez on my posting, “You Are Special” on Monday, 2/19/07. She has a given us a great link to an amazing free online course being taught by many of the same people who appeared in “The Secret”. Check it out! I signed up for it!
(If you would like to get your own copy of the DVD “The Secret”, you can get it by going here:
You can also order “The Secret” from the Spiritual Cinema Circle. Watch the video above and click the link to become a member. You’ll see this amazing film is available from them as well.)
The primary theme behind “The Secret” is the “Law of Attraction”. This law basically says that what we think about or desire — what we believe — what our feelings are about whatever we’re desiring — and what sort of action we take concerning those desires — will determine what we will attract into our lives. Learning how to apply the “Law of Attraction” is “The Secret”.
One of the things I learned from “The Secret” is that we need to be grateful for what we have and where we are in life today — right now — this moment. When we are constantly striving for some sort of perfection, we are consistently dissatisfied. Every time we fall a little short of our perfectionist goal, we feel as though we’re not measuring up — we feel a sense of failure. It’s futile to try to feel grateful when we’re floundering in feelings of despair over not reaching perfection.
“Some of us (perfectionists, especially) fuss so much over making the ‘right’ choice, but in life, all that’s really needed is to make any’ good’ choice, believe in it, go through with it, and accept the consequences.”
I’m not proposing that we shouldn’t strive to be our best — that’s an honorable goal for everyone. I am proposing that we’ll be a lot happier if we can accept that, in life, there may not be perfection. Everything is always evolving — it’s all in a ceaseless state of movement. Even as you read this, your hair is growing, your cells are dying and being reborn, and your blood is moving through your veins. Your life changes more than it stays the same. Perfection may happen in a particular moment, but it won’t last because it’s an impermanent state. Trying to hold on to perfection or forcing it to happen causes frustration and unhappiness.
A true sense of gratitude will evade us if we’re constantly striving for perfection. Where did we get this idea that we have to try to be perfect? Maybe it happened in our childhood with a demanding parent. The people around us — our friends — our families — they’re not demanding that we be perfect. They’re not judging us on that scale. We are adults now, and we can choose to let go of the need to perform for what we think is someone else’s approval.
As you study “The Secret”, you will learn that the universe — God — the higher power — is a loving place that asks that we be grateful and happy with who we are today. We are free to be imperfect. We are free to take ourselves less seriously. We’re human — and if we can learn to embrace who we are — with all our imperfections — we will learn the vital lesson — that we must learn to love ourselves.
“This is the very perfection of a man, to find out his own imperfections.”
~~~ Saint Augustine

And here’s a favorite quote of mine that looks at this topic in a more humorous way …

“They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they’d make up their minds.”

~~~ Winston Churchill
Always remember that …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Learn more about what I’ve written about today. Get “The Secret” as soon as you can — either through the Spiritual Cinema Circle (see video and link above) or via this link: Click here to order your copy of The Secret DVD.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
