Quantity or Quality?

“We live not on things, but on the meaning of things.” ~~~ Saint Exupery

There’s little question that we live in a time when quantity is valued more than quality. We are bombarded with symbols that make us believe that larger, faster, and more, are synonymous with “better”. The media is constantly telling us that we need to find more time, collect more possessions, and seek more love in order to realize true happiness.

The truth is exactly the opposite of that. Anytime you can find a small quantity of something that is high in quality, your level of satisfaction will be greater. One example that comes to my mind today is that of a small piece of tasty rich, dark chocolate and how much more satisfying that is than an entire bar of a lesser quality brand. Or, what about a wonderfully fulfilling experience? Doesn’t that one luxurious moment mean so much more than hours of empty ones? It’s not the quantity of time that matters, rather it’s the quality of that one special moment that fills your soul.

When your focus is on quality rather than quantity, your life experiences can be so much more meaningful. A small portion of good, healthy food can do more to nourish your body than a bucket full of empty fast food. Another example is that of a few hours of good solid, restful sleep. How much more refreshed you will feel the next day than if that sleep had been frequently interrupted. A few moments of good conversation with someone close to you can be so much more satisfying than several hours of mind-numbing television.

When we are blindly pursuing quantity we are depriving ourselves of quality. Some things are good in great quantity, especially if they are high in quality. I’m thinking of those special moments with someone you care about — the more of those — the better. A big hug from that same someone is always welcome in quantity because it is filled with quality.

It isn’t how much you have — or how much you do that matters. It’s more about what you make of each moment that will count in the long (and short) run. Try to fill your moments with quality every day.
