Thanksgiving — a Time of Sharing

Nov 22, 2006 @ 08:04 am by Ron

“Happiness is not so much in having — as it is in sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

~~~ Norman MacEwan
There is a famous story that I like to share around this time of year. Since the story is related to food — and the sharing of food, it seems appropriate to share it with you as my Thanksgiving message to all of you who read this blog. I am extremely thankful for every one of you.
The Story of Stone Soup
If you’ve heard this story before, you’ll probably realize that there are many variations that have been passed down over the years. This is how I heard it originally….
The story takes place in a small town that is suffering a severe famine. The weather has been awful, the crops have all failed, and the people are hungry.
One day a traveler comes into the town. The townspeople are not pleasant to the traveler — they want him to move on for fear that they’ll be expected to feed him. They make it very clear to him that there is no food to be found in their town, and that he should just move on to another town.
The traveler explains to the leaders of the town that he doesn’t need any food. In fact, he tells them, he was planning to make a soup to be shared with everyone in the town. The villagers begin to come into the town square and watch suspiciously as the traveler builds a fire and fills a large cauldron with water. The traveler does not speak any further to the villagers as he waits for the water to begin to boil.
Once the water is vigorously boiling, the traveler, with great ceremony, reaches into his cloth bag and pulls out a stone. He wipes the stone with great care before dropping it into the cauldron of boiling water. He makes quite a show of sniffing his boiling brew and comments several times about how delicious his stone soup is.
Needless to say, the townspeople begin to show more interest in what he’s doing despite their suspicions. As they draw closer to the cauldron, the traveler mentions that the soup would taste a bit better with a little cabbage in it. As he continues to stir his brew, one of the villagers brings him a cabbage to share, which the traveler drops into the stone soup.
This same thing repeats itself many times with the traveler mentioning different vegetables each time. Soon the soup has cabbage, carrots, onions, beets, and many other vegetables until there is plenty to feed all the people in the town.
Isn’t that a great story?
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”
~~~ Buddha

As you can guess, the story talks about the natural human tendency to horde when times are tough. When the money supply is low and it’s hard to have enough, we tend to pull back and put so much of our energy into self-preservation. We isolate ourselves and shut out others. As the story of stone soup reveals, in doing so, we often deprive ourselves and everyone else of a feast.

The metaphor goes beyond just food. Often we find ourselves hoarding ideas, love, our own talents and abilities. When we do this we think we’ll be richer if we keep these things to ourselves. But what is really happening is that we’re making the world around us, and ourselves, poorer in the long run.

The traveler was able to see that the townspeople were holding back, and he had the genius to draw them out and inspire them to give, thus creating a spread that none of them could have created alone.

Since what we all do has an effect on all those around us, we should learn to share our gifts, and in so doing, inspire others to do the same. The rewards are many for all concerned.

“Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves.”

~~~ James M. Barrie
There is a good chance that I won’t be back to write again until after this coming weekend. Until then, I wish you all a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving.
Shanti ….
You can get your copy of this program — and any of the other guided manifesting meditations at my Enlightened Beings E-Store. Here’s what one person had to say about this …
‘I’ve been learning about being a ‘deliberate creator’ for about a year now…and in that time have read widely on the subject. I have found Jafree’s book on manifesting to be the most helpful on this subject. It is a joy to read…comprehensively covering all the factors that we need to understand about how the process of manifesting works. For me one of the most powerful things about the book is that I can feel my vibration being uplifted as I read. So…not only does Jafree teach you how to be a conscious manifestor…he also raises your vibration which helps you really be a conscious manifestor. So among all the books I have read, this is the one I constantly return to for inspiration…and the one that I can most whole heartedly recommend!’ With much love to you Jafree. ~Josie Wood, Addingham, Yorkshire, UK, Writer
