The Beginner’s Mind

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

~~~ Albert Einstein
During this past week or so, there have been a variety of “opportunities for growth” taking place in my environment. Out of all this came several moments where there was a choice to either stay rigid in certain beliefs and philosophies, or to ask questions and seek new answers. So much of this led to a reinforcement of one of the Buddhist tenets — that of impermanence — that nothing is permanent — and the concept of “The Beginner’s Mind”.
There’s no doubt that one of the greatest threats we all face from time-to-time is when something happens that makes us question our current beliefs or our perceptions of reality. However, since I’m getting “a bit long in the tooth” I’ve learned that questioning is a great way to keep my mind supple and strong. As we get older, it’s so easy to keep settling on one way of seeing things and being rigid about examining other possibilities. That’s why I’m delighted to have this blog and my other blogs to keep me researching and studying.
Just think of all the people in your life who simply refuse to budge on certain issues and beliefs. Think of all the “sacred cows” each of us has that could sure use a bit of prodding. We all like to think of ourselves as being open-minded, but few of us truly are. How many of us are truly willing to question those things we take for granted?
“Sometimes questions are more important than answers.”
~~~ Nancy Willard

If we could develop a willingness to question things, even things we’re certain we’re right about, we would find that we’d be awakened from our complacency — that our minds would be more supple — and we’d be more open to understanding people and perspectives that meant nothing to us before. What great reasons these are to maintain that child-like inquisitiveness, no matter how experienced we think we are or how many years we’ve been on this planet.

In the Zen Buddhist tradition, this willingness to question — to stay open in our minds to new possibilities — is known as “The Beginner’s Mind”. Think of all the new possibilities that we would never see as long as we maintain our viewpoint that we already know something and we remain closed to another point of view? This concept of being willing to question things doesn’t mean that we therefore don’t believe in anything. It doesn’t mean we have to question everything in the world every minute of the day. It’s merely a way of acknowledging to ourselves that we’re humble enough to admit we don’t know much about this ever-changing universe of ours.

“He who has a why can endure any how”

~~~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Most of the amazing progress and change that has happened in our history has happened because someone, somewhere, questioned something and by doing so revealed a new truth — another way of doing something. Even new standards of ethical or moral behavior came about because some old belief was questioned and new knowledge was obtained. This can even happen in our own individual lives. Our old ways of dealing with certain aspects of our life can be changed for the better just because we examine and question the way those old beliefs made us feel.
Keep your “Beginner’s Mind” active and stay open to new ways of living your life and you’ll find new levels of peace and happiness every day.
“He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever”
~~~ Chinese Proverb

Namaste!

And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …

You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.

You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.

Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

~~~ Buddha
