What did you think of that video I left for you on Friday? I know, it wasn’t directly related to “The Secret”, but it certainly did have a message that was heartwarming — and in many ways gave a sense of value. I hope you enjoyed it. Now, let’s get back to our discussion of “The Secret” and our venture into the principles that will make it work for you.

A quick side note before we get started — I hope you’ll take just a moment and look at this beautiful photo for today’s article — and think about this —

— isn’t that a great message about hope?

Are you making as much money as you want? Unless you’re a very rare person, I’ll bet the answer is, “No!”

If that’s the case, then in order to increase your income, what you need to figure out is how to create more value in what you’re doing to make money — and then you need to take the next step — and that’s to let people know that you’ve added value to what you were doing.

This added value might be a new set of ideas that you’ve come up with — or it could be a new or improved product that you’ve created — or maybe you’ve figured out a way to provide an even greater service than you were before — or it might be as basic as letting people know that you’re willing to work even harder for them.

Also, always keep the principles of “The Secret” in mind — giving of this added value must come about because you took some action. You probably won’t take that action — or even have a clue as to what action to take unless you’ve focused your mind — your heart — your being — on whatever it is you want — and asking yourself how to go about getting it — which will let the universe know that you’re looking for it.

Forwards, backwards — however you look at these principles — it will always boil down to the inclusion of all the principles. If you’re someone who thinks that all you have to do is just wish for something — or — as it has become more popular to say, “Put it out to the universe” — and then sit back without taking action and making sure that action has value to others — then all I can say is, “Good luck!”

Speaking of good luck — that may happen from time-to-time — it happens to all of us where something just drops into our lap when we haven’t given anything of value to get it. I know that there are hundreds of people who have learned about “The Secret” and will tell all their friends that “The Secret” really worked for them when they have some coincidence happen in their life. Those “happenings” are wonderful but there is still something left for you to do when you receive them — there is still a price that needs paying.

Look at all the people who have have experienced winning big money in the lottery. A good percentage of them end up broke again after some time. Those who have done studies on this have found that many of those who lost it all didn’t use their windfall to give enough value to others. Most of it went in pursuit of more “things” for themselves — the fulfilling of selfish desires.

I remember a show on TV some time ago — I think it might have been the Oprah Show — where as an experiment, a homeless man was given $100,000 dollars. They just gave it to him — no strings attached. Even though he did get off the streets for awhile — even though he did some good things for members of his family, he ended up as broke, hopeless and homeless as he was when he first received the windfall. In order for that “gift” to have brought him out of where he was in life, he had to find ways to add value to his life and to the lives of others. I know my take on this was that he didn’t really want the benefits of this gift. He didn’t ask for it — he didn’t take any action to get it — and there was little value given on his part to earn it.

Another way to look at this phenomenon is to look at how people are buying luxuries today. Big-screen TVs is one example. People are buying these expensive televisions with borrowed money. Yes, they end up with the TV in their home — but they have to pay a premium for it — they have to pay the interest on the loan, or the credit card debt, in addition to the price of the TV. If they had saved up for the TV and paid for it in full with money they earned by giving value, the price would have been lower — no interest charges.

The price for our desires is that we have to give something of equal or better value if we want to receive that desire. Whether the price is time, money, work, experience, education — whatever — that’s how “The Secret” works, it always has — and it always will.
