Time Flies! What Are You Doing With It?
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”~~~ Steve Jobs
There has been a lot of discussion about time around our house lately. With both my wife and I having recent, serious health issues — and the fact that I’m in that category of “elderly”, I suppose that’s a normal topic. The main thing — and the message of this blog posting — is that no matter what your age — or how close you are to your likely “life expectancy” — the message here is — don’t waste it! It’s much too precious.

You’ve all probably heard someone in your life talk about how quickly time seems to go by as you age. We do have a tendency to “use it up” much too quickly. How we use the time we have on this planet is one of the most important decisions we make, yet we don’t tend to take it seriously.
Just think about all the things you dream about that you’ve “put off until tomorrow”. We live in such a hectic world. The fast pace of our lives makes it too easy to put our dreams and desires on the back burner so we can deal with the challenges of today. We tell ourselves that we’ll get on to chasing our dreams, or satisfying our desires, when we have more time. We’ll get around to it tomorrow. But what if there’s no tomorrow?
One of the reasons, (and I have to stress this is only my opinion!) is that we’re too afraid that if we don’t get on with the concerns of today, that we’ll never find “success”. I have to ask, though, how successful are we when we don’t make the pursuit of our dreams a priority in our lives? Now that I’m the age I am, I have to ask myself, “What was I waiting for?”
“Time is free, but it’s priceless.
You can’t own it, but you can use it.
You can’t keep it, but you can spend it.
Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.”~~~ Harvey MacKay
In my own case, I’ve spent too much of my life with the notion that I was not deserving of true happiness, so I couldn’t see that there was much I could do about courting it. The best way for me to chase that elusive happiness was to do all the things I thought I was supposed to do to find “success” in my business career. Sure, that brought about a great sense of satisfaction, but was that true happiness? Not by a long shot!
I’m writing this for all of you that are putting your dreams and desires off until tomorrow. When we look decisively at our existence and state, “Why not now?” we’re empowered to begin changing our lives this very moment. We procrastinate for many reasons, from a perceived lack of time to a legitimate lack of self-belief, but the truth of the matter is that there is no time like the present and no time but the present.
“Don’t count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count.”~~~ Anonymous
Whatever our dreams and desires might be, those will be accomplished more quickly, and with more efficiency, when we go after them using whatever resources we have at the moment.
Whatever joy you desire — whatever passions you carry in your soul — whatever you know will make you contented — it can all happen for you today — in this present time, rather than at some time in the distant future. Just keep reinforcing the knowledge already in you that there is nothing standing between you and your happiness. If you want to hold the keys to your own fate in your hands, all you have to do is make up your mind that now is the time to take control of your destiny.
“Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have – so spend it wisely”~~~ Kay Lyons
And, as I always say in closing — remember these words …
You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.
You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.
Shanti … (A sanscrit word meaning, “Let there be Peace. Peace, beautiful Peace. Peace within, Peace without. Peace in this world. Peace for all beings.”)
