Meditation and Buddhism - Part One

May 15, 2008 @ 11:43 am by Ron

“There seem to two kinds of searchers: those who seek to make their ego something other than it is, i.e. holy, happy, unselfish (as though you could make a fish unfish), and those who understand that all such attempts are just gesticulation and play-acting, that there is only one thing that can be done, which is to disidentify themselves with the ego, by realizing its unreality, and by becoming aware of their eternal identity with pure being.”

~~ Fingers Pointing Toward the Moon by Wei Wu Wei

Last week I indicated that I’d like to devote a few articles to the subject of Buddhism and how it relates so closely to meditation. Let’s face it, there must be some correlation, because I’ve never met a Buddhist who didn’t have a regular practice of meditation in their life. I have now written 16 articles on the subject of meditation over the past several weeks. I also wrote a few more over the entire time that I’ve been keeping this blog. Those of you who have been reading these writings know that I consider meditation vital to everyone’s life, whether they are following a Buddhist lifestyle or not. This is something that everyone should do in order to find inner peace and happiness. By looking at some of the basics of Buddhist teaching and seeing how those teachings relate to our own lives, I’m hopeful that you’ll all begin to see why I feel this is so important.
===================================================
… But first, here is your meditation for this week. This one is about 3 minutes long and is the sounds of beautiful waterfalls. The pictures that accompany it are also quite beautiful if you would like to keep your eyes open. I always like to use nature sounds and sights when I can as these are both great doorways into good meditations. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.

Rather than get into the life story of Buddha, I’ll get right into the basics of his teaching. There are many web sites and books that have the story of Buddha’s life. Here is one that does a good job.

http://orias.berkeley.edu/visuals/buddha/life.html

What is a Buddha? According to most dictionaries, it is someone who has achieved a state of perfect enlightenment. The study of Buddhism has as its focus the achievement of “awakening” or “enlightenment”. The word “Buddha” is often interpreted as meaning “awake”. “The Buddha” is said to be the enlightened one or the awakened one.

In some of the past articles on this blog, I have talked about the Four Noble Truths that are so much a part of the Buddhist teachings: (1) the suffering, (2) the cause of suffering, (3) the cessation of suffering and (4) and the Eightfold Path. These are a way to free ourselves from attachments and delusions – and – reaching an understanding of the Truth about all things. Great emphasis is put on the practical aspect, because it is only through practice (meditation and right living) that one can attain a higher level of existence and finally reach Nirvana.

Here’s a quick review :

First Noble Truth: Life can be filled with suffering. There’s disease, injury, high rent, final exams, warm beer, complaining spouses, natural disasters, and yes, even death. Sure, there is a lot of good stuff about life, but we have this tendency to spend so much of our time trying to protect ourselves from all the bad stuff, that we forget to pay attention to the good. Even when you’re feeling happy, there always seems to be something lurking in our thoughts that makes us feel some sort of stress. People end up worrying about tomorrow or fretting about the past. It seems like our brains are constantly chattering about the stuff we should have done, or we’re worrying about what we’re going to do next. We’re either suffering, or we’re in pain, or we’re dissatisfied (or all three), about one thing or another. If you truly think about it, you’ll see that this is the truth.

The Second Noble Truth: The origin of suffering is the craving for pleasure. This is the reason for the First Noble Truth. We get it in our heads that we want things, and our minds then become an instrument for chasing after those things. Or, you get in your head that you don’t want something, and you end up running around trying to make things you don’t like go away. The actual objects we’re chasing after are irrelevant. Wanting things — anything — severely limits a person’s capacity to be joyful and serene. We focus so much of our consciousness on wanting things and more things. We have convinced ourselves that if we can only get the things we desire, we’ll be happy. One of the lessons Buddha taught is that nothing is permanent, so even when we get what we want it doesn’t last, so we start craving more and more. Even after we get the things we crave, we don’t stay happy — the glow wears off after a while and we start wanting more things. As Buddha said, the things we get don’t last. They break, they get lost, they wear out, they leave, they get old, they die. It’s our attachment to the things we crave and our resistance to losing them that adds to this suffering in our lives.

The Third Noble Truth: The Truth of the cessation of suffering. Some people say that all this talk about suffering makes Buddhism a pessimistic way of living. And, perhaps it would be if not for the Third Noble Truth — that there is a way to end the suffering in our lives. This is great news, right? This is what the Buddha discovered — it was the main aspect of what he learned. Ridding ourselves from suffering can happen to anyone, anyplace, here and now. There is a catch, though. We have to do something to end the suffering in our lives. One of things we have to do is to bring the practice of meditation into our everyday lives. The “thing” that’s messing us up in the Second Noble Truth is our ego-mind, and one of the best ways to get it under control is through meditation. The key to end all suffering is to get all desire, ill will and ignorance out of our lives. The Buddha didn’t leave it there, though. He gave us the answer when he told us the Fourth Noble Truth.

We will continue this next week with the Fourth Noble Truth.
=====================

Those glimpses we get of peace, love, acceptance and happiness when we’re meditating will soon grow into more than glimpses if we keep faithfully practicing. Keep those feelings alive. A meditation can be as simple as one, deep, conscious breath. When something happens in one of your moments to cause you to suffer, just stop and take one of those breaths and remember, “This too shall pass!” Another thing that is wonderful, especially at this time of year, is to have a fresh flower where you work. Just stop from time-to-time and look at it — don’t label it — don’t judge it — just be with it for a couple of moments.

Even though the live webcasts of the Eckhart Tolle New Earth classes are now concluded, you can still download the entire course. I highly recommend it. It’s completely free. All you really have to do is get the book, “A New Earth — Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. You can access the course online at: http://www.oprah.com/obc_classic/webcast/ane_marketing.html. You’ll find everything you need there — all 10 classes. If you happen to have iTunes on your computer, you can also access the course by subscribing to it through the podcast link in iTunes. I did take the course, and I’m on my second reading of the book. For me, this has been life-changing. Check it out. Several million people around the globe took part in this amazing spiritual teaching. I hope you’ll soon be one of them. This is how we can create a new consciousness on the New Earth.

If you’re new to us here, be sure read the entire series about meditation. If you look on the upper left of the sidebar, you’ll see a list of the categories. Click the one called “Meditation” and you’ll be able to read the articles you missed. They start with the January 24, 2008 post. The video meditations that I included with the earlier articles may no longer function. I’m sorry about that, but those are out of my control. Hopefully, they’ll all still be working.

Do include meditation in your daily life. If you’re just starting out, make it a 10 minute meditation. If you’ve been doing this for a while, try to do a minimum of 20 or 30 minutes. The longer you can maintain your focus on just your breath, the better. And, remember, anytime you take a deep, conscious breath — that’s a breath where you’re putting your focus only on that breath — that’s a meditation. Do it often every day — especially when you’re feeling stressed. I guarantee, you’ll find more peace and happiness in your life if you’ll do this.

You are the most precious gift you can give yourself. Every day look in the mirror and say, “I’m available to more good than I have experienced, realized or imagined ever before in my life!” Do this every day while you look into your own eyes.

You are special — and you are loved. You are the greatest gift you can be.

I don’t know if any of you, my fine readers of this blog, have an interest in starting a blog of your own, but if you do, I have something I’d like to pass along to you.

Over the past few days I’ve been reading a new ebook written by Kevin Brown. Now, I know that a lot of people don’t want to start a blog of their own because they think it’s too complicated. Well, after you read this ebook, your fears will be gone for good!

Kevin is something of a WordPress expert and has recently released a new ebook that goes into great detail on how to install and set up WordPress blogs. This blog you’re reading is written using WordPress, and I also use it for my other blog. Kevin’s book, BlogStorm Blueprint, is the most up-to-date book I’ve ever seen about WordPress with screenshots from the very latest version.

I highly recommend it — especially since it’s being sold at a giveaway price of under ten dollars. It’s really a bargain when you realize that you’ll be getting 106 pages of clear, well-written details.

I’ve been using WordPress for a long time and I think I know quite a bit about how to work with it. I can say that after reading Kevin’s book, I discovered that I don’t know everything. Even though some of the information was basic for me, I still learned loads from the book and heartily
recommend it to you.

Meditation — Path to Happiness

May 08, 2008 @ 07:43 am by Ron

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”

~~~ Buddha
First things first. Just a fair warning, this post is a little longer than usual. I hope you’ll stay to the end, though.
Let’s talk about happiness this week and where to find it. Where are you looking for your happiness? Have you found it? How’s it working for you? (I have to smile whenever I write that phrase or say it. It’s the one Dr. Phil uses all the time.) When you have those moments that feel like happiness, do they last — or do they have a tendency to fade away much more rapidly than you’d like? Let’s get into these questions and a few more …
===================================================
… But first, here is your meditation for this week. This is another guided meditation to help you to discover who you truly are. It’s about 10 minutes long. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.
Here’s a link if the video doesn’t start when you click the “PLAY” button:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgluJAx8Bn4
====================================================
Here’s another profound question for you …
…. Do you truly want to be happy?
That sounds like a pretty dumb question, doesn’t it? However, there’s something going on in that question that we need to think about. You have to really want happiness in order to have it. This means that you have to want it more than you want to be your old ego-self. You know who I mean — the “self” that doesn’t want to let go of all those old stories about who you are — all those old beliefs, opinions, dreams, memories and judgments — that “me” part of you. This is a tough concept for us who live in Western cultures. We’ve been trained to believe that happiness can be ours if only we work harder on self-improvement — or just work harder on our jobs or our relationships — or have more success, or more friends, or more money or more physical strength or beauty — and if only we could be a little younger!
Nope! Sorry folks. It just doesn’t work that way.
It is that ego part of you — that part of you that is always looking for more — filled with various desires for more things and more pleasures — this is the part of you that is keeping you from finding the happiness you seek. That part of you doesn’t have a clue about what happiness truly is. Only when the realization that this isn’t who we truly are sinks in, will we finally find true happiness. Once that discovery is made — once we put that ego part of us to sleep, you will find that you won’t need more things to make you happy — because you already are.
One of the many things we’ve discussed in this blog over the past several weeks is about how this ego of ours is working overtime to get the upper hand. This is why I’ve been promoting the virtues of meditation as much as I have. It’s while we are developing the habit of daily meditation — developing the habit of going onto the silence of the present — the Now — that we are learning to get those glimpses of true happiness. When we are able to turn off the focus on our mind-chatter — that is when we can feel the peace, contentment, happiness and joy of who we truly are.
Those of you who have been readers of this blog for any length of time know that I practice a Buddhist lifestyle. I follow, what I call, a basic Buddhist style of living. That means that I’ve never spent any time in a monastery — I’ve never studied with a Buddhist teacher or guru. I was merely looking for a way to find some peace in my life and my studies of Buddhism seemed to provide the answers I needed.
The one major factor involved is that meditation is vital.
Perhaps one way to demonstrate why I feel this way about meditation is to provide some information about Buddhism and what it means. My approach to Buddhism has (and is), perhaps, not very sophisticated. Perhaps it has been because of a certain discomfort with devotion through ritual. Perhaps it was because my first exposures to Buddhists and Buddhism was a varied one. Before I moved to Ohio, I lived in Vermont for over 35 years. There were a lot of practicing Buddhists who lived in Vermont. Some of the folks I met were following Zen paths – some were following a Tibetan path – some were followers of the teachers from Vietnam — some were associated with the Shambhala teachings. I followed the recommendations of several of these wonderful people and ended up reading a variety of books from these varied teaching paths.
I don’t consider living a Buddhist lifestyle as a form of religion. Many people, Buddhists included, will disagree with that statement. For me, it’s not a religion — rather, it’s a spiritual way of living.
Therefore, while keeping in mind that the primary focus of this series of blog articles is the practice of meditation, I’d like to devote the next few articles on the basics of Buddhism — what it means to me — and why meditation is such an important aspect of this philosophy. Unless I hear comments to the contrary from you, I’ll move ahead with that plan.
Those glimpses we get of peace, love, acceptance and happiness when we’re meditating will soon grow into more than glimpses if we keep practicing. Keep those feelings alive. A meditation can be as simple as one, deep, conscious breath. When something happens in one of your moments to cause you to suffer, just stop and take one of those breaths and remember, “This too shall pass!” Another thing that is wonderful, especially at this time of year, is to have a fresh flower where you work. Meditation — From the Stillness
May 01, 2008 @ 06:31 am by Ron
“We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.”
~~~ Buddha

Since we devoted this space to a promotion for the Spiritual Cinema Circle last week, we need to get back to our discussion about meditation this week. This week we’re going to talk about finding your way into the stillness of the present moment and how to hear what can come out of that stillness. Sometimes it will be just the feelings of great peace — and other times it may be thoughts that contain real wisdom, love and compassion. As I said before, there are two places where we can go for answers — one is to our ego-mind — and the other is in the stillness of the Now. Only one of these will give us the Truth — and that is the Now.
===================================================
But first, here is your meditation for this week. This is another guided meditation to help you to deepen the stillness within you. It’s about 10 minutes long. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take two deep cleansing breaths and enjoy your meditation.

Here’s a link if the video doesn’t start when you click the “PLAY” button:

====================================================

I hope you had a chance to see the offering from Cinema Circle last week. If you missed it, it’s the post right under this one — just scroll down a bit. Take a look and check it out. There’s a short synopsis of all the films coming out in May, 2008. It’s a great idea for a special Mother’s Day gift – a gift that she will be able to enjoy month after month. Here’s that link again …

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Now, back to our discussion about meditation …

As I mentioned two weeks ago, we are human beings so we can’t help but think. Thinking is what we do. Even if we’d like to find some way to turn it all off, that’s not going to happen.

There is some good news, though, so read on …

Once you have integrated the practice of meditation into your daily lifestyle and you become more comfortable and experienced with keeping the focus on your breath, you will find that most of the unnecessary thinking will begin to fade somewhat. Yes, it will still crop up — it just won’t be as invasive as it used to be. The thoughts that will remain will be those that have some real value to them. When you’re in a good meditation and you are aware of the stillness of the present the thoughts will almost always be those that show you wisdom, love and compassion.

Usually, when we meditate we are focusing our minds on something other than our thoughts and feelings. However, it is alright to put your attention onto a thought or feeling as long as you don’t become attached to it — or identify yourself with it. When those thoughts and feelings come into your mind and you find yourself leaving the stillness of the present moment and following the thought back to the past or into the future, that’s the signal that you’re identifying with the thought and you need to bring your focus back to the Now. When you can learn to let the thoughts merely float in and can then let them float out again, you will stay in touch with the stillness of the present and know that you’re not identifying with the thought or thoughts.

Remember, there are two “you’s” — there’s the “ego-you” and there’s the “essence-you”. When you go chasing after the thoughts and feelings of the past — or the thoughts and feelings of the future — that’s the “ego-you” doing its thing and identifying with what’s going through your mind and keeping you away from the peace of the present. Your ego will use every trick in the book to keep you under it’s control.

When you can stay in the present — when you’re basking in the stillness of the peacefulness of Now — that’s the “essence-you” — the Real YOU! That’s when you can just watch those intrusive thoughts and feelings float in and then float out again with each breath you take. When you can stay in the present, not only during meditation, but at other times in your daily life, there will be less suffering in your life. You will be more at peace and will feel happier about your life.

We meditate because we want to learn that there is another way of looking at our life’s purpose. We’ve been programmed since birth to identify with the thoughts and feelings of our past and to worry about our future, when all there really is — the only place we can truly be — is right now at this moment. The past is gone — the future doesn’t exist — there is only right now — this present moment. Whatever is happening in your life at this moment — be with it. There’s nothing else you can do, anyway, so just be with it. If you don’t like it — well — remember, “This too shall pass!” And if you love it — Great! But, remember, “This too shall pass!”

Those glimpses we get of peace, love, acceptance and happiness that we get when we’re meditating will soon grow into more than glimpses if we keep practicing. Keep those feelings alive. A meditation can be as simple as one, deep, conscious breath. When something happens in one of your moments to cause you to suffer, just stop and take one of those breaths and remember, “This too shall pass!”

“Turn your mind away from things which are not permanent.”

As I’ve been mentioning in the past few articles, if you aren’t taking the “New Earth” course, I highly recommend it. It’s completely free. All you really have to do is get the book, “A New Earth — Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. In my meditation I often use what I believe is a powerful aide to deep meditation. It’s the The Holosync Solution. I knew that meditation was a vital element to nurturing my soul — to opening myself to the universe — and this tool has allowed me to achieve and receive the benefits of deep, long-term meditation — and to achieve it much more quickly. If you’re having trouble “getting meditation to work for you” - then the The Holosync Solution is what you’re looking for.

Regular, daily meditation can give you …

(1) Increased intelligence and creativity.
